Expanding on the Academy Award-winning short “Hair Love,” the cast includes Scott Mescudi (Stephen Love), Issa Rae (Angela Young), Brooke Monroe Conaway (Zuri Young Love), Loretta Devine (Gigi Young), Harry Lennix (Russell Young), Tamar Braxton (Star), Sheryl Lee Ralph (Sheree), Debra Wilson (Additional Voices), and others. Sheryl Lee Ralph created her charitable organization, The DIVA Foundation, 33 years ago to mobilize resources, fight stigma, fundraise, and deliver urgent messaging around the awareness and prevention of HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening conditions. The Foundation has launched efforts that harness the power of the arts to amplify awareness.

New York City Center announced casting updates for the Annual Gala Presentation Pal Joey. Joining the cast are Loretta Devine (replacing Jennifer Holliday) as nightclub owner Lucille Wallace and Jeb Brown as Tony, the gangster who’s caught her eye.

In 2018, a workshop for the musical was held and starred Ledisi Young, Quentin Earl Darrington, Donald Webber Jr., and Loretta Devine. It was directed by Michael Arden. Michael Butler, famed producer of the musical Hair: The American Tribal Love-Rock Musical, passed peacefully November 7, 2022 at the Los Angeles Jewish Home for the Aging in Reseda, CA.  He was born November 26, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois.

This week Jennifer Holliday and Loretta Devine will sit down on Friday Night Vibes to discuss their experience working on 'Dreamgirls' with Tiffany Haddish and co-host Deon Cole. Additionally, super fan Diimond Meeks will perform 'And I Am Telling You' on the episode. Holliday and Devine starred in the original Broadway production of the musical.

Also joining the cast in recurring guest roles are Ellie Kemper ('Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt') as the school librarian, Chee; Jack McBrayer ('30 Rock') as a pet kanga bird; Ryan Michelle Bathé ('The Endgame') as Barry's mom, Sierra; and Wendell Pierce ('Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan') as Barry's father, Cliff.
