The four Chicago-based playwrights newly named to the Playwrights Unit, a year-long residency in partnership with Chicago Dramatists, include Lucas Baisch, whose work has been developed at Victory Gardens Theater, Post Q at Links Hall, Chicago Dramatists' Saturday Series and more; Dawn Renee Jones, recipient of the 2015 Ruby Prize for her play A Heap See; Evan Linder, whose recent credits include the acclaimed remount of his play Byhalia, Mississippi, (2016 Non-Equity Jeff Award for new work) at Steppenwolf's 1700 Theatre; and Emma Stanton, recipient of the 2016 Princess Grace Award Playwriting Fellowship, which includes a year-long residency at New Dramatists in New York.

Kangagirl Productions (Margaret Nolan, artistic director) in partnership with Missing Bolts Productions (Blair Baker & Zac Kline, artistic directors) and NoPassport Theatre Alliance & Press (Caridad Svich, founder) will present a special staged reading of original short plays written in response to the shooting at Pulse Nightclub.

Beginning October 1, Premiere Stages, the professional theatre company in residence at Kean University, will accept submissions for the 13th annual Premiere Stages Play Festival.  This yearly competition for unproduced scripts offers developmental and production opportunities to four playwrights with strong ties to the greater metropolitan area (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut).

Casting is complete for the three 'developmental productions' featured in Goodman Theatre's 13th annual New Stages festival, a free celebration of new works by some of the country's finest established and emerging playwrights. These three plays, which are staged in repertory with modest production values following three weeks of rehearsal, include Blue Skies Process by Abe Koogler, directed by Henry Wishcamper; Support Group for Men by Ellen Fairey, directed by Kimberly Senior; and The King of Hell's Palace by Frances Ya-Chu Cowhig, directed by Tea Alagi. Rehearsals started yesterday for The Alliance Theatre's production of Ugly Lies the Bone, a beautifully written drama about postwar recovery by Lindsey Ferrentino. Ugly Lies the Bone will run on the Hertz Stage at the Alliance Theatre September 16 - October 9, 2016. Opening night is Wednesday, September 21, 2016. The Eugene O'Neill Theater Center announced today that is now accepting script submissions for the 2017 National Playwrights Conference.

Roundabout Theatre Company (Todd Haimes, Artistic Director) has just announced the cast for the first new play of Roundabout Underground's newly expanded 2016-2017 season. The world-premiere production of Kingdom Come by Jenny Rachel Weiner will be directed by Kip Fagan, as part of Roundabout's 50th Anniversary Season, and will feature Brooke Bloom (Layne), Carmen M. Herlihy (Samantha Carlin), Alex Hernandez (Dominick Aquendo), Socorro Santiago (Delores Aquendo) and Stephanie Styles (Suz).

Tickets are on sale today for all the productions in the 2016/17 season for the Alliance Stage, Hertz Stage, Theatre for Youth and Families, and the Kathy and Ken Bernhardt Theatre for the Very Young series.  The 48th season includes seven world premieres, five musicals, five productions by Atlanta playwrights, and exceptional productions for youth and families. 

Shakespeare & Company continues to roll out its 39th performance season with the Regional Premiere of the Woodward and Newman award-winning play, Ugly Lies the Bone, written by Lindsey Ferrentino, and directed by Daniela Varon. This insightful, emotional and timely drama joins the Bernstein Theatre repertory on June 16 and runs through August 28.
