Deck the halls, trim the tree, and spin the dreidel. BroadwayWorld is continuing our tradition of celebrating the holiday season with a 12 Days of Christmas countdown. This year we've invited the incomparable Norm Lewis to share his favorite holiday performances. Check out Norm's full list of selections
I would be remiss if I did not include this angel in my 12 Days Of Christmas choices. Yes, the singular voice of Karen Carpenter. Arguably the most perfect pop voice of all time. Effortless. Full of pathos. Perfect. I remember hearing her beautiful voice ringing throughout our house during the holiday season. It always made me feel like I was being wrapped by a warm blanket whenever she sang.
Kim David Smith's perfect diction and bright but silken voice which lies in a glorious valley somewhere between tenor and baritone is layered and nuanced and never pushed for power. He doesn't need to because he knows exactly how much the space he's playing in needs in order to fill it without overflowing.
He's been called 'a breathtaking concert artist' ('The New York Post') with a 'quietly charming sense of humor.' ('The Orange County Register'). On January 15 and 16 at 7 p.m., Davis Gaines brings both qualities to the Carpenter Center's stage for two nights of storytelling and song. 'An Evening with Davis Gaines' is part of the theater's Cabaret series where patrons are seated directly on the Carpenter Center stage for an up-close cabaret experience.
As the poster shows, The Merry Little Christmas Show was a visit to Scott Dreier's living room. It was an intimate evening with a very up close and personal man who sang and told stories about his love of Christmas. Scott has a very lovely and warm singing and speaking voice. It doesn't matter if he is singing or talking, it comes across as one on one. He is performing just for you.
The 85 minute show included guest star Kurtis Simmons, who sang beautiful original compositions about Christmas as well as dueting with Dreier. Both were backed by superb musician,/musical director Andy Langham, whose rapport with the two singers is top notch.
The Sandra Feinstein-Gamm Theatre (The Gamm) opens the new year with the off-Broadway hit Admissions by playwright Joshua Harmon (Significant Other, Bad Jews). Winner of both the 2018 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards for best play, Harmon's newest comedy-drama explores white privilege in education-a topic made even more relevant by the country's headline-making college admissions scandal. Bryn Boice, associate artistic director of Commonwealth Shakespeare Company, makes her Gamm directorial debut with Admissions. The production features Deb Martin (Maxine Faulk in The Night of the Iguana) and Jim O'Brien (Mr. Mundy in The Night Watch) as husband and wife prep school administrators pushing for racial diversity in the student body. Gamm newcomer Jacob Osborne plays their son, whose Ivy League ambitions expose deep cracks in his parents' progressive values.
