BWW Review: The Gamm's GLORIA Plays With Notions of Comedy and TragedyBWW Review: The Gamm's GLORIA Plays With Notions of Comedy and Tragedy
by Andria Tieman - Nov 28, 2018

Playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins seems like a man who likes to make theatre audiences uncomfortable, and make them question their most basic reactions. Rhode Islanders will be familiar with his play Appropriate, which was at Trinity Rep in 2016, and may have left many scratching their heads in a 'what did I just watch?' way. GLORIA, playing through December 16 at the Gamm is a similar head scratcher, but is remarkably well-executed with a strong cast and excellent direction. The mental gymnastics this play asks of the audience are confounding, and there are plenty of moments where the script feels manipulative, but the end result is satisfyingly perplexing in a way that feels new. BWW Review: Sondheim's ROAD SHOW: Looking For AmericaBWW Review: Sondheim's ROAD SHOW: Looking For America
by Nancy Grossman - Jan 23, 2018

The Lyric Stage Company continues to meander through the works of Stephen Sondheim with ROAD SHOW, his most recent collaboration with librettist John Weidman. While not in the upper echelon of Sondheim's works, the score and the Lyric production make it worthwhile. This musical travelogue about the Mizner Brothers, a pair of entrepreneurs and con men who sought their fortunes in escapades from Alaska to New York to Florida in the early 20th century, is the story of their successes, failures, and the art of the deal, fitting right in with our American zeitgeist. by Keith Waits - Jun 14, 2017

As the traditional circus format has faded more from view, the 'cirque' idea has adopted a higher profile. Cirque de Soleil is an international juggernaut, a cross between dance and human acrobatics presented with a layer of glitzy showmanship, that occupies rare territory in the world of theatre. But more and more smaller, local companies have sprung up around the U.S. CirqueLouis brings this idea to Louisville, a fresh approach to narrative storytelling on a larger scale than most companies.
