For the first time in its 60-plus year history and six productions on Broadway, West Side Story - a musical whose iconic dance scenes have an instant recognizability in both the musical theater world and in culture in general - will not include the original Jerome Robbins and Peter Gennaro choreography. This Ivo van Hove-led revival of the classic has thrown away convention and brought in the talents of a choreographer iconic in her own right, to bring this musical into the modern age.

Since principal casting was announced for the Ivo van Hove-directed Broadway revival of West Side Story was announced last July, there have been public concerns over the actor playing the role of Bernardo, Amar Ramasar.

Audiences will no doubt recognize the quintessential American musical West Side Story when its latest revival opens next week. Its unforgettable music, lyrics and story are the same. But this radical reimagining injects a modern twist to the classic story: a video element meant to intensify and augment the action. Bill Whitaker and 60 MINUTES cameras were given unprecedented access to the production, filming its rehearsals and interviewing its creators. The story about the new West Side Story will be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Feb. 16 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

West Side Story star, Isaac Powell, will rejoin the cast of the Broadway revival this evening following a knee injury that sidelined the actor, causing the production to postpone its opening night by two weeks. 

In what has become an annual ritual, a total of 40 established and emerging composers, lyricists, and librettists will converge on the Goodspeed campus from mid-January through mid-February 2020 to participate in the Johnny Mercer Foundation Writers Colony at Goodspeed Musicals.
