What did our critic think of BREAKING THE CODE at Central Square Theater?

We all know the names ‘Bletchley’ and ‘Alan Turing’, if only thanks to the 2014 film The Imitation Game starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Hugh Whitemore’s Breaking the Code follows a similar trajectory, documenting Turing’s journey from school boy to death in a collection of non-chronological scenes. Through Whitemore’s play we are able to gain an insight into the life of this character, piecing together his genius and his struggles slowly into a complete understanding. 

Oxford Playhouse has announced a bold new production of Edward Albee's Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, which will be staged as part of its spring 2026 season and directed by Playhouse Artistic Director, Mike Tweddle.

The full cast has been announced for a brand new production of Hugh Whitemore's acclaimed play Breaking the Code. The play follows mastermind Alan Turing's career as a visionary mathematician and codebreaker.

Written by Hugh Whitemore and directed by Gordon Park, Pack of Lies is based on the true story surrounding the most significant spy operation in 1960s London in the middle of the Cold War, dubbed “The Portland Spy Ring”.

While much of Alan Turing’s work was the subject of the Official Secrets Act, his personal life was not afforded the same anonymity and details of his sexuality overshadowed his achievements for many years.  Hugh Whitemore’s BREAKING THE CODE seeks to balance the scales of the awareness of Turing achievements along with the outdated laws on homosexuality that saw the father of computer science convicted and subjected to hormone therapy which eventually broke him, physically and mentally.

The Barnstable Comedy Club will present Hugh Whitemore's gripping moral drama, PACK OF LIES. The play is directed by James F. Ring of Barnstable Village and is being presented as part of the Club's celebration of its Hundred-Year Anniversary Season.

During the Second World War, tucked away in the country at Bletchley Park, the most brilliant mathematical minds in Britain were working to crack the complex German military code known as Enigma. One of them was the eccentric genius Alan Turing, who invented a machine that broke the code.

Casting is announced today for Wiltshire Creative's ground-breaking production of Hugh Whitemore's Breaking the Code, the story of the brilliant maths genius Alan Turing who cracked the Enigma code and helped win World War II.

Wiltshire Creative will premiere Barney Norris' explosive new adaptation of Lorca's Blood Wedding, retold in present-day Wiltshire, at Salisbury Playhouse in February as part of its 2019-20 Autumn Winter season.
