Geffen Playhouse Raises More Than $1.3 Million At Annual Backstage Fundraiser

Geffen Playhouse raised more than $1.3 million for the theater's education, community engagement and artistic initiatives at its 17th annual Backstage at the Geffen fundraiser held May 19, it was announced today. Danny Glover (Lethal Weapon franchise, The Color Purple, Dreamgirls) presented the Artistic Impact Award for Harry Belafonte, which was accepted by daughter Gina Belafonte on his behalf, and Jane Fonda (Grace & Frankie, Book Club, 9 to 5) presented the Distinction in Theater Award to Lily Tomlin.
Utah Symphony Presents Screening Of 'Star Wars: A New Hope'

Jedis will flock to witness "Star Wars: A New Hope" in Concert on May 9 and 13 at 7 PM with an already nearly sold out performance on Saturday May 11. The famous, Oscar-winning score by John Williams, performed by Utah Symphony, will be paired with the full-length motion picture film on the big screen at Abravanel Hall. GEORGE. is a historical fiction play about a soft-spoken young man from Modesto, California who would go on to create the biggest film-franchise of all time. "GEORGE." follows George Lucas through the creation of his first three films, 'THX 1138,' 'American Graffiti,' and finally 'Star Wars.' The audience will watch George as he chooses who to listen to, the hot-headed Coppola, the whimsical Spielberg, or the firm voice of his father, George Lucas Sr. They will watch as he learns what control really is in art. They will watch how a young, soft-spoken man from Modesto, California became George Lucas, the most important filmmaker of the 20th, and 21st, century. The Xoregos Performing Company is presenting a new play at Theater for the New City by Arnold Schulman, a playwright and screenwriter who has been nominated for two Academy Awards and written for Broadway. Schulman's Sign in the Six O'Clock Sky debuts at Theater for the New City March 14 and runs through March 31. Shela Xoregos directs the production. Tickets are $18 and $15 for seniors and students.

Karen O and Danger Mouse will premier their multisensory art installation this spring at Los Angeles' prestigious Marciano Art Foundation. “An Encounter with Lux Prima,” an immersive, communal listening experience soundtracked by the pair's forthcoming album, unites their singular creative vision with groundbreaking audiovisual technologies. “An Encounter” sees the duo collaborate with an illustrious cast of fellow artists including creative director Barnaby Clay (David Bowie—“Life On Mars” Revisited, SHOT!), Oscar-nominated sound designer Ren Klyce (Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Fight Club), renowned lighting designer Tobias Rylander (Robyn, The xx, FKA twigs), visual artist Davy Evans and creative consultant Warren Fu (Daft Punk, The Weeknd, Depeche Mode) to bring Lux Prima to life. Further collaborating with projection mapping innovator Travis Threlkel—co-founder and chief creative officer of MSG's Obscura Digital, George Lucas' Skywalker Sound and Meyer Sound, the installation plays across every sense and is intended as the living, touring nucleus of the duo's forthcoming collaborative album,Lux Prima.
