Review: THE MANOR Brings a True and Tragic Tale to Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills Review: THE MANOR Brings a True and Tragic Tale to Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills
by Shari Barrett - Jan 25, 2019

Every January I look forward to attending THE MANOR by Katherine Bates, presented by Theatre 40 inside the historic Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills where the story upon which it is based actually took place. Now celebrating its 17th year, the annual production has become a Los Angeles/Beverly Hills institution with several performances selling out even before tickets go on sale to the public. Its popularity, no doubt, is due to the scandalous true story as told by the talented actors, costumed to time-period perfection, as well as the chance to be inside the grand and glorious architectural landmark in which the events of 90 years ago actually took place, performed in two acts taking place 10 years apart. The names of all characters in the Doheny saga have been changed, of course, "to protect the guilty" as we are told before the play begins by the mansion's loyal butler, James (Daniel Lench who has masterfully played the part for 6 years). BWW Review: The EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES Rev Up Uncertainty About Christmas BWW Review: The EIGHT: REINDEER MONOLOGUES Rev Up Uncertainty About Christmas
by Don Grigware - Dec 8, 2018

Important to note right from the start ... Jeff Goode wrote The Eight: Reindeer Monologues back in the early 1990s around the time of the Clinton administration. The vehicle was his way of speaking out on a number of political issues. Maybe the sex scandal of Bill Clinton? Taking Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus, who are revered as two of the most benevolent fantasy characters of all time, and gossiping about their bouts with sexual harrassment and alcoholism, turns them into pretty despicable people. But when you are that good and held up as a model of perfection, something's gotta give. Everyone has flaws, and Goode has his reindeer take them to the extreme. (more...)

Review: World Premiere MARTIANS: AN EVENING WITH RAY BRADBURY Takes Audiences on an Imaginative Journey to Life on Mars Review: World Premiere MARTIANS: AN EVENING WITH RAY BRADBURY Takes Audiences on an Imaginative Journey to Life on Mars
by Shari Barrett - Sep 26, 2018

Most of the MARTIANS text is taken from Ray's own words from interviews and books he's written on the art of writing, as well as adaptations of his Martian stories The Strawberry Window, The Blue Bottle, The Messiah and Night Call, Collect. Adapted with and directed by Jeff G. Rack, Mount personifies Bradbury to a tee as, acting as our guide to mankind's next great adventure to the planet Mars, allowing us to get to know the mind and heart of the great writer who believes that humanity can only survive by carrying our culture out into the Universe. In fact, one of Bradbury's favorite films was Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind. 'Going to the stars, taking your culture with you, and living forever! That's what it's all about!' Bradbury said. That's the theme explored in MARTIANS: AN EVENING WITH RAY BRADBURY. (more...)

by Ellen Dostal - Jun 8, 2017

Unbound Productions producers Jonathan Josephson, Paul Millet and Jeff G. Rack have already proven they can create smart theatre based on classical literature. Their wildly popular Wicked Lit horror series at Mountain View Mausoleum has developed a loyal legion of fans who keep coming back year after year. Now they've taken their outdoor immersive theatre experience and expanded into the mystery genre, mounting their first major production under the moniker Mystery Lit with HOLMES, SHERLOCK AND THE CONSULTING DETECTIVE. BWW Review: WICKED LIT 2016 Continues to Thrill and Chill Audiences During its 8th Annual Production
by Shari Barrett - Oct 11, 2016

Each October for the past several years, I have thoroughly enjoyed welcoming the Halloween Season by attending WICKED LIT, produced by Unbound Productions at the spooky Mountain View Mausoleum & Cemetery in Altadena. This year audiences are being treated to three World Premiere short plays staged at various locations indoors and outside (yes, it is dark as you walk among the standing headstones with werewolves howling in the distance). When you arrive, you are issued a program on which there is either a red, yellow or green sticker denoting in which group you will view the three plays with a running time of almost 3 hours, including a pre-show and two intervals during which all audience members meet at Camp Mountain View, the outdoor staging area for the evening. U.S Premiere of THE SUITCASE Extends Through August 25 at the Echo
by BWW News Desk - Aug 15, 2016

The U.S. premiere of The Suitcase has extended through August 25th at Atwater Village Theater. In this darkly surrealistic yet surprisingly humorous drama set somewhere between dreams and reality, one of Poland's foremost contemporary playwrights takes us deep into the hearts of a father and son and asks us to consider what we are responsible for in the wake of enormous national tragedy. Inspired by the true story of Michel Leleu, the son of a French Jew murdered at Auschwitz who recognized his father's suitcase at an exhibition on the Shoah. (more...)
