This month, HEY VIOLA! Viola Desmond: The Soundtrack of a Life plays from October 15 – 25 at the Anvil Centre in New Westminster. After interviewing star, Krystle Dos Santos in September, it was a pleasure to see her take the stage playing Canadian Hero: Viola Desmond in the show. Viola Desmond was a Canadian civil rights activist and entrepreneur. In 1946, Desmond fought against racial segregation as she refused to leave the “Whites only” section of a movie theatre in Nova Scotia. Desmond was arrested and charged with tax evasion. Her experience was publicized and sparked a movement amongst Canadians against racial discrimination. Viola Desmond is currently featured on the Canadian ten-dollar bill and her story will remain important to Canadian history, as racial injustices are still an ongoing issue we face today.

Returning from a long period of dormancy, theatre makes a comeback in Vancouver: better and safer than ever! At the Anvil Centre, the show: HEY VIOLA! Viola Desmond a?' the Soundtrack of a Life plays from October 15th to 25th. This production follows the life of Canadian civil rights activist: Viola Desmond highlighting her fight against racial injustice in Nova Scotia. Starring Krystle Dos Santos (Co-Creator) as Viola and direction by Tracey Power (Co-Creator), HEY VIOLA also incorporates 15 songs from Desmonda??s era. With musical accompaniment from local musicians Steven Charles (guitar/bass), Chris Davis (trumpet, drums, and piano), and Mary Ancheta (keyboard), Dos Santos will sing the night away while telling the story of a woman who sparked a movement across Canada. I had the pleasure of chatting with Krystle Dos Santos touching on Violaa??s life, the creative process, and her favourite parts of the show! Read the full interview below!

After months of being closed, the Anvil Centre is thrilled to raise the curtain, light up the stage and present the premiere of Hey Viola!, a musical exploration of Canadian Civil Rights hero, Viola Desmond, performed from Oct. 15 - 25.

The Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival today announced that the company will move from its longtime home at Boscobel House and Gardens in Garrison, NY to a new site in Philipstown, NY gifted by philanthropist Christopher Davis as a permanent home for the company.

SoLow Fest, a Philadelphia tradition since its conception in 2010, made its debut in Portland last year and is back for another round- this time in the name of strengthening the conviction behind values of DIY art-making. Named for its a?oeso-low-to-the-grounda?? values, SoLow Fest is dedicated to presenting artists who perform in non-traditional, low-tech venues to keep overhead costs low and encourage work to be made in locations where art might otherwise never be seen. SoLow Fest is free for artists to enter.

This September 5th through 22nd, the Free Fringe Philly Cabaret will be open nightly from 7pm to midnight as part of the renegade Free Fringe Philly festival. Held at RADIOKISMET, Kismet CoWork's new pop-up event space and podcast studio at 10th & Hamilton Streets, and powered by Fergie's Pub, The Free Fringe Philly Cabaret will showcase a curated, featured performance each night at 8pm, and bar/socializing time thereafter. Completing this 4-way collaboration will be the cityblog Philebrity, acting as media sponsor and signal booster. Admission each night is FREE.

The Bristol Hippodrome has confirmed that Somerset outlet shopping centre Clarks Village will be sponsoring its 2019 pantomime Dick Whittington, which stars soap legend Shane Richie in the title role.

59E59 Theaters (Val Day, Artistic Director; Brian Beirne, Managing Director) announces the 2019 line up for the annual EAST TO EDINBURGH festival. EAST TO EDINBURGH begins on Tuesday, July 9 for a limited engagement through Sunday, July 28. The performance schedule varies. Short+Sweet Theatre (Sydney) celebrated its dramatic climax with a glittering awards ceremony following its final Gala Final performance last weekend.

The Pop House, Tulsa's premier craft ice pops company, is adding its newest location to the city's most vibrant and promising mixed-use area: Meadow Gold District. The Pop House was established in 2016 with a mission to bring delicious ice pops to people all around the state of Oklahoma through a variety of exclusive flavors that include strawberry lemonade, watermelon mint, orange strawberry banana, chocolate sea salt, birthday cake, and more. Shortly after winning the grand prize at the 2016 Tulsa Start-Up Series, the first storefront was opened in 2017 on Brookside at 37th & Peoria. Since then, The Pop House has also emerged its products into several Downtown Tulsa area locations including Goods Bodega (Arts District) and Decopolis (Deco District). 'Route 66 is a pillar of the Tulsa community and we are thrilled with the opportunity to join the Meadow Gold District with a location at Buck Atom's Cosmic Curios this summer,' says Chris Davis, owner of The Pop House. The addition of Pop House is yet another example of how Meadow Gold District is continuing to grow and provide room for small businesses in Tulsa with an interest in becoming part of the unique, historic Route 66 redevelopment scope that is set out for this area along 11th Street between Peoria and Utica.

Raue Center For The Arts is excited to announce it will be tripling its offerings for area youth in 2019 - 2020. Raue Center's arts education outreach program, Sage Studio, will offer a newly expanded class schedule, the continuation of a youth theatre production established last year, and an enhanced relationship with in-house professional theatre company, Williams Street Repertory.

Following sold out shows, Full Disclosure Theatre are back with their fourth new writing night XPOSED. They are proud to present a brand new line-up of short plays revealing the naked and entertaining truths about queer life. The fourth XPOSED will be staged on Sunday 24th February at Southwark Playhouse, to tie in with LGBT History Month.
