The privilege to pee has never been more topical with the satirical comedy musical URINETOWN opening this week. This critically acclaimed musical, produced by Heart Strings Theatre Co in association with Hayes Theatre Co, opens at the Hayes Theatre on Wednesday this week, 11 January.

Ready for a new year full of splendid shows and numerous Opening Nights. Here is my short list of some of this year's recommendable shows you can't miss.

Widely hailed as one of this century’s great directorial debuts, Jordan Peele’s era-defining Get Out injected new life into horror with its witty subversion of racial politics and elitist social mores. Two years later, his wildly entertaining Us plumbed everything from isolationist fears and late-capitalist power structures to the rich lineage.

NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT is an energetic, quintessential Broadway theatre work. Mitchell has captured that traditional stage musical essence with aplomb and has injected a fresh, in the moment, vibrancy.

Heart Strings Theatre Co in association with Hayes Theatre Co has announced a season of the satirical comedy musical URINETOWN at the Hayes Theatre Co from 11 January 2023.

An industry reading of a new American musical, TEN BRAVE SECONDS by Will Van Dyke and Jeff Talbott, will take place this week (Thursday, November 17) in New York City directed by Ellie Heyman, with musical direction by Patrick Sulken. 

Following last month’s announcement and subsequent record sell out of the concerts in celebration of R.E.M.’s Chronic Town, Rich Robinson of The Black Crowes, long-time friend and promoter Velena Vego, and streaming partner Veeps are collaborating to make the show available for R.E.M. fans around the world via a premium livestream experience.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch composer Stephen Trask joined former Hedwig on Broadway stars Darren Criss and Lena Hall and music director Justin Craig joined Vulture Festival for an evening of storytelling and song to celebrate the 24th anniversary of the cult-favorite Broadway show, major motion picture, and worldwide phenomenon.

The tour begins tonight in Bend, OR at the Volcanic Theater and will include West Coast headline shows in Seattle, Portland, Santa Cruz, Los Angeles and more. The Shotgun Players have announced their 2023 season of stunning and provocative theatre celebrating diversity and connection.

Tony Award-winning star of stage and screen John Cameron Mitchell (Sandman, Hedwig and the Angry Inch), one of alt-culture's boldest creators, joins forces with international cabaret star Amber Martin in rare downtown appearance with a brand new evening of songs, stories and characters, all chosen by the hand of fate on the 'cassette roulette.' Backed by Justin Craig and the Hedwig house band Tits of Clay, and featuring opening set from J. Hoard, it's never the same show twice!

'Celebrating Lucy Simon'  will feature never-before-heard stories from Simon herself, as well as from collaborators Judy Collins, Marshall Brickman, Marsha Norman, Victoria Clark, and more. To Barbra, With Love, the highly successful celebration of the inimitable Barbra Streisand, will play in Brisbane in 2023 following concerts in Adelaide, Sydney and Canberra, with local symphony orchestras. Premiered with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at Hamer Hall earlier this year, the concert was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike.

Founding Artistic Director George Strus has announced the complete cast and additional creative team members for the inaugural Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival. Curated by Strus, Dominique Rider and Josephine Kearns, Breaking the Binary Theatre Festival will feature seven evenings of work created and developed by TNB2S+ theatermakers.

Following on from the success of the 2021 Neglected Musicals presentation Cameron Mitchell will direct and choreograph Nice Work If You Can Get It, a new take on classic 1920s musical farce. 

Symphony Space, a home for unforgettable events that happen one time only and only at Symphony Space, has announced the lineup for Selected Shorts: Back to School, produced Wednesday, September 28, at 7pm EST for in-person audiences at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater and viewers tuning in worldwide via live-stream.

Bitch began writing Bitchcraft eight years ago over the course of several moves and political movements. After landing in Los Angeles, she assembled a creative coven to complete the project including Anne Preven (Beyonce, Madonna, Demi Lovato), God-des, and Roma Baran (Laurie Anderson) who all advised her on the production.

This November 2022, musical theater is coming to LUSH Lounge and Theatre and will debuting La Cage Aux Folles!
