BWW Review: THE RIVER at TheaterWorksBWW Review: THE RIVER at TheaterWorks
by Joseph Harrison - Oct 14, 2018

When does a passion for something become an obsession? And does the desire to share that passion with another person create a unique opportunity to build a bond or an opportunity to push the other person away? 'When we find each other, are we trying to recapture someone that was once lost?' These are some of the questions answered in Jez Butterworth's (JERUSALEM, THE FERRYMAN) THE RIVER, the opening play of TheaterWorks' current season in Hartford. (more...)

THE RIVER Comes to TheaterWorksTHE RIVER Comes to TheaterWorks
by BWW News Desk - Sep 18, 2018

On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, a man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come to fly-fish since he was a boy. But she's not the only woman he has brought here - or indeed the last. Seductive, chilling and poetic, THE RIVER asks: when we find each other, are we trying to recapture someone we once lost? BWW Review: COME ON HOME feels the pulse of Ireland at The Abbey TheatreBWW Review: COME ON HOME feels the pulse of Ireland at The Abbey Theatre
by Jini Rooney - Jul 24, 2018

Come on Home is a quintessentially Irish tale exploring the fragile yet resilient bonds of family against a backdrop of sexual intolerance, rejection and regret. Playwright Philip McMahon's new narrative dredges the murky waters of small-town Irish prejudice and presents it compassionately without bias or judgement. (more...)

BWW Review: A Brand New Look for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE at the Guthrie TheaterBWW Review: A Brand New Look for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE at the Guthrie Theater
by Karen Bovard - May 11, 2018

The plot of AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE seems ripped from today's headlines: think Flint, think Detroit. Of course, Norwegian Henrik Ibsen (an iconoclast in his day, generally regarded as "The Father of Social Realism" in western theater history) penned this prescient piece back in 1882. What the Guthrie is producing is a new adaptation by Brad Birch, first staged in 2016 in Wales. It's undergone further revision for this production. Birch's adaptation is most welcome. The familiar story is lifted up to a whole new level by the striking visuals and swift, intriguing transitions devised by director Lyndsey Turner and her design team. (more...)

by Michael Dale - Feb 12, 2018

It might be easier to pity the hardworking gentleman at the core of Martin McDonagh's new darkly comic drama, who loses his job when his employer eliminates his position, if it weren't for the fact that the function of his profession was to kill people. (more...)
