Julian Christopher, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, C.A. Johnson, and Abe Koogler have been selected as the 2019-20 Rita Goldberg Playwrights' Workshop Fellows. This year marks the 20th iteration of the Workshop, which was established by renowned playwright Arthur Kopit, and brings together emerging and established playwrights in a space where they are free to explore new material, without commercial pressures. Studio Theatre rounds out its 2019-2020 season with the announcement of its Studio X productions-characteristically edgier, immersive offerings which include cult-favorite monologist Daniel Kitson with his latest project, Keep., and the Studio-commissioned world premiere of Abe Koogler's Aspen Ideas. Created with the support of Studio R&D, the theatre's incubator for new plays, Aspen Ideas probes the nature of ideas conceived by the wealthy and elite to solve the world's ills. Kitson famously made his DC debut at Studio Theatre in 2017, his first time outside of New York and a rare US engagement. He returns with a meditation on accumulation, material possessions, and the value we assign to them. (more...)

Directed by Lila Neugebauer, Mrs. Murray's Menagerie marks The Mad Ones' first production since their critically acclaimed play Miles For Mary and celebrates 10 years of "triumphantly original" and "skillfully acted" (New York Times) theater that is saturated with "precision, invention, and richness" (Time Out New York). Building on 40 years of producing powerful contemporary theatre, Studio Theatre is pleased to announce a new class of commissioned playwrights and directors to Studio R&D, its incubator to support the creation of new work from inception to first production. Incoming Studio R&D artists are playwrights James Fritz, James Ijames, Steph Del Rosso, and Emily Schwend, as well as directors Carl Cofield, Lila Neugebauer, and Eric Ruffin. These exciting talents from the US and UK will have Studio's full support in creating aesthetically diverse new work to be presented in future seasons and introduced into the international repertoire.
