BIO

R. Jahan is a Chicago native, a proud queer, Black creative making their mark as a playwright and performer. A passionate storyteller, they are dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices and exploring the intersections of identity, love, and resilience. Regional premiere of Jeremy O. Harris's Slave Play (Short North Stage). Off-Broadway: National Queer Theater's The Survival (PAC), The Importance of Being Earnestly LGBTQ+ (Actor’s Temple). Other: National Queer Theater’s Criminal Queerness Festival at Lincoln Center Waiting for Gordon, DREAMing Out Loud (La MaMa), The Scottsboro Boys (Progressive Theater), Diary Of A Suicide (Brooklyn Art Haus). When not onstage, he is an advocate for diversity and equity in the arts and an avid supporter of community theater initiatives. What did our critic think of SLAVE PLAY at Short North Stage? People always ask critics two questions: “did you like it?” and “is it worth seeing?” When it comes time to discuss SLAVE PLAY, these two questions are going to be tough to answer. Did I like it? From a theatrical rubric, it checks off the boxes of fantastic acting and wonderful direction, and powerful message. However, is it enjoyable? At times yes … and sometimes it felt like a punch to the stomach.
