Well, there should be something descriptive, enticing or informative to engage the audience from the outset.The Shaw Festival in Niagara on the Lake has gone out of a limb and programmed a virtually unknown play that is rarely, if ever produced. Oh, and the title is simply SEX. And it's author is no other than the infamous Mae West! But did West really write plays? She most certainly did and did so for her own star turns. Written in 1926, unable to advertise using the title, and later raided after running for a year, SEX was almost forgotten. Happily, this highly polished and entertaining production now running through October turns out to be the sleeper of the season.

Just shy of a century after her sold out Broadway run was branded an 'obscene, indecent, immoral and impure drama' by a New York grand jury, Mae West's Sex gets a rousing production at the Shaw Festival. Directed by Peter Hinton-Davis, this powerful melodrama begins in Montreal's red light district of the 1920s, then shifts locations to Trinidad and New York City. Overflowing with trademark Mae West one-liners, and with its frank sexuality heightened by Hinton-Davis's gender-bent casting, Sex begins previews at the Jackie Maxwell Studio Theatre on June 21st.

After taking London's West End by storm, comedy thriller The Ladykillers makes its North American premiere under the direction of Artistic Director Tim Carroll. The Shaw Festival's production of Graham Linehan's stage adaptation - based on one of the best-loved British films of all time - begins previews tomorrow at the Festival Theatre.

When the stage directions in a script indicate 'to kiss' any good actor knows it will be 'stage kiss.' That is, kind of awkward at first attempt in the rehearsal hall, but hopefully with practice becomes convincing enough to the audience without the actors actually becoming emotionally involved with each other during the run of the play. That's alot of information to digest for an action that merely calls for two people playing their lips on each other's . Briefly stated, that is the underlying premise in the Shaw Festival's delightful romp, STAGE KISS playing at the Royal George Theatre.

Of Marriage and Men, a sharp double-bill featuring two of George Bernard Shaw's one-act gems explores the humour of marriage.  Directed by award-winning theatre veteran and Shaw Festival alumni Philip Akin, Of Marriage and Men - featuring How He Lied to Her Husband and The Man of Destiny - begins previews May 13 at the Royal George Theatre.

Real life and fantasy collide head-on in the hilarious romantic romp Stage Kiss. Anita Rochon, in her Shaw Festival directing debut, helms this backstage farce by Pulitzer Prize finalist playwright Sarah Ruhl that begins previews April 11 at the Royal George Theatre.

San Diego Junior Theatre, with a mission to provide engaging, innovative, high-quality theatre education and productions for children of all cultural heritages, ages, abilities and levels of interest produces a San Diego Junior Theatre premiere of MAGIC TREE HOUSE: PIRATES PAST NOON, directed by Randall Eames. The production will showcase the work of 20 San Diego Junior Theatre youth performers and 10 youth technicians, ranging in age from 8 to18.

Krista Jackson, former Shaw Festival intern director and Zone 41 Theatre's artistic director, returns to direct Brian Friel's award-winning masterpiece Dancing at Lughnasa. Beginning previews on May 14 at the Royal George Theatre, this production features a quintet of fiercely talented Shaw Festival ensemble members - Fiona Byrne, Diana Donnelly, Claire Jullien, Sarena Parmar (in her Festival debut) and Tara Rosling - as the formidable Mundy sisters.
