Edith Freni’s work has been produced, developed and read at numerous professional theatrical institutions including Steppenwolf Theatre Company, New York Theatre Workshop, LAByrinth Theatre Company, The Public Theatre, The Williamstown Theatre Festival, Ensemble Studio Theater, PS 122, Partial Comfort Productions, The McCarter Theatre and The Lark, among many others. She is a two-time nominee for the prestigious PONY award, has been a finalist for the Jerome Fellowship and the Heideman award; and was a semi-finalist for the 2013 O’Neill Playwrights Conference. In 2010, her play TOTAL POWER EXCHANGE was nominated by New York Theatre Workshop for the New American Plays for Russia Initiative, co-sponsored by The Center for International Theatre Development and the U.S. Embassy in Moscow. . TPX is also a nominee for the 2014 L. Arnold Weissberger Award for Playwriting. She currently teaches playwriting and play analysis in the Department of Theatre Arts at the University of Miami, where she is also under commission to write a new adaptation of OEDIPUS REX. OEDIPUS will be the third play in a trilogy of classics adaptations that include Edith’s version of THE BACCHAE and A WORK OF PURE FICTION (based on Aristophanes’ The Clouds). Upcoming productions: BUENA VISTA at Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Oedipus Rex at UM. Edith is also working on a new play commission from Steppenwolf. She holds both her BFA and MFA from NYU’s Department of Dramatic Writing, where she received a Goldberg playwriting fellowship and the Harry Kondoleon graduate playwriting award. She is a former competitive amateur boxer and a competitive age-grouper triathlete.
