Review: PETER GRIMES, Royal Ballet And Opera
by Alexander Cohen - May 9, 2026

Peter Grimes hinges on balancing the duality between its chorus and Grimes as an individual. In one corner the spectacle of the mob, bustling and boiling with rage in their witch hunt for Grimes, and in the other corner is lonely fisherman Grimes himself, whose mental breakdown demands gutturally intimacy. Can Deborah Warner’s 2022 production, revived at the Royal Opera House, rediscover that equilibrium that electrified its first outing? of PETER GRIMES at Royal Ballet And Opera?
Review: Despite Stellar Cast, Met's ONEGIN Revival Refuses to Fly in Warner’s Misbegotten Production
by Richard Sasanow - Apr 21, 2026

In the Met’s much-anticipated revival of Tchaikovsky’s EUGENE ONEGIN, almost anything that could go wrong, in fact, did, at Monday night’s premiere. How can something that looks good on paper turn into a mostly dull night at the Met is the definition of directorial misconduct. In size and scale, Deborah Warner’s conceit was wrong.

Review: Puccini’s TRITTICO Storms the Bastille, Giving Asmik Grigorian Three Times the Showcase
by Richard Sasanow - Jun 15, 2025

One of the operas at the top of my list for next season at the Met is the Deborah Warner staging of Tchaikovsky’s EUGENE ONEGIN that brings back soprano Asmik Grigorian for the first time since her 2024 debut in MADAMA BUTTERFLY. Not that there’s anything wrong with Puccini, the major composer I’ve heard her sing. The first was that Met debut with her golden-throated, heart-breaking Cio-Cio San, followed by her blonde bombshell of a Freudian Turandot (plus a recital) at the Vienna State Opera. Very recently, there was this season’s justifiable cheering from the audience--myself included--when she took on the three soprano roles in IL TRITTICO at the Paris Opera’s home at the Bastille.
