Review: A CHRISTMAS CAROL at Portland Playhouse
by Krista Garver - Dec 15, 2025
Portland Playhouse’s annual production of A CHRISTMAS CAROL continues to be essential holiday viewing. It’s a gorgeous piece of theatre that honors tradition while finding ways to surprise even its most devoted returnees. Consider me among them, already looking forward to next year.

Review: THE BED TRICK at Artists Repertory Theatre
by Krista Garver - Oct 13, 2025
What did our critic think of THE BED TRICK at Artists Repertory Theatre? Is all well that ends well? If you’re familiar with Shakespeare's comedy, you know this is a loaded question. The play's supposedly happy resolution hinges on the 'bed trick,' a deception in which one person tricks another person into sex by impersonating a third. It's a troubling foundation for romance, and Keiko Green's incisive new comedy THE BED TRICK, now opening Artists Repertory's season, interrogates this ancient narrative device for our modern moment.

by Krista Garver - Jun 27, 2018
Remember the movie 9 to 5? Now picture it with chainsaws. Add in a very heavy dose of internalized sexism, and you'll come close to having THE SECRETARIES, written by the comedy troupe Five Lesbian Brothers, aka Maureen Angelos, Babs Davy, Dominique Dibbell, Peg Healey, and Lisa Kron.

BWW Review: Good Intentions Lead You Know Where in Scathing Comedy THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, at Artists Rep
by Krista Garver - Apr 12, 2018
THE THANKSGIVING PLAY, which is having its world premiere at Artists Rep, soundly skewers a group of white well-meaning liberals for being so focused on not giving offense that they can't do anything meaningful at all. It's funny, biting, and often much closer to the truth than it's comfortable to admit.
