He was honored as a Legend of Off-Broadway Honoree and recognized for his Outstanding Body of Work by The Lortels Awards on multiple occasions. The Helen Hayes Awards named him Outstanding Director, Non-Resident Production for Road to Mecca. Fugard received the Best Foreign Play award from the New York Drama Critics Circle Awards for Road to Mecca and was also honored by the same organization for Best Play for A Lesson from Aloes. The Drama League Awards presented him with recognition for his Unique Contribution to the Theatre.
