The Odyssey Theatre Ensemble re-opens its re-envisioning of the Odyssey's 1969 West Coast premiere of The Serpent, the Obie award-winning play by Jean-Claude van Itallie. The production initially opened in March, 2020 as part of the Odyssey's 50th Anniversary “Circa '69” Season, but was shuttered five days later by the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The University of the Arts will present Promenade, book and lyrics by María Irene Fornés, music by Rev. Al Carmines, directed by Amy Dugas Brown, as part of the Ira Brind School of Theater Arts Spring 2021 remote season. The project will be available for viewing February 5 through February 14, 2021.

Mabou Mines, the esteemed experimental theater company, and Weathervane Productions, in association with Philip Glass' Days and Nights Festival, add free documentary film screening and Promenade concert performance, and announce complete casting for a unique upcoming celebration of legendary playwright and director María Irene Fornés. The February 21-March 7 engagement centers on the New York premiere of Philip Glass' transformation of her five-page play Drowning into an opera and a version of Fornés' acclaimed Mud. JoAnne Akalaitis directs these two intimate productions-both with new music composed by Glass-at Mabou Mines (150 First Avenue).

Season. Sossi previously directed the West Coast premiere exactly 50 years ago, in the spring of 1970, as the second production ever at the then brand-new Odyssey Theatre. The Serpent opens on March 7 at the Odyssey's current home in West L.A., where performances will continue through May 3.

Christmas Rappings is back in a very special 50th Anniversary concert production of this beloved Greenwich Village tradition-a Christmas oratorio unlike any other. When Al Carmines introduced audiences to Rappings on December 14, 1969, they had come to expect the surprising range and inventiveness of this multiple Obie-award winner, but perhaps not an evening that faithfully tells the Christmas story through such a high-spirited, often funny, collision of musical genres, from country to classical to blues to gospel, and even with a rousing tango.

IN CIRCLES is a feast for the eyes, even if Gertrude Stein's texts as lyrics seem nonsensical at times. Just go with the flow and let the atmosphere of the avant-garde 1968 theatre scene set your mind free! If only Stein's lover Alice B. Toklas was there to hand out her special recipe brownies to enhance the 80-minute experience!
