Why Dead Ladies?

Out of all the plays produced on professional stages, only a fraction come from women and gender-expansive playwrights. We know the canon isn’t complete until it includes the voices of Dolores Prida, Zora Neale Hurston, Fumiko Enchi, and so many others who shaped theatre history. Expand the Canon is changing that narrative — and we need you with us!

It’s no secret that things are getting ~spooky~ in the non-profit arts space, and many funding paths have disappeared for organizations like ours. We are dedicated to our mission but we need community support to keep this going! Day of the Dead Ladies (DotDL) is not only a celebration of the incredibly artists we believe deserve a permanent place on the canonical ofrenda, but a fundraiser to fund ETC’s core research and programming, directly supporting the researching, curating, and amplifying of plays by women and gender-expansive writers across history.
