10 of the Best Broadway & Musical-Inspired Games

With billions of people worldwide gaming, it’s natural to see games created with crossover appeal in mind. It’s a multi-billion-dollar industry, but it is also one where it is difficult to stand out in a saturated market.
We could cite numerous examples of movies and books being transformed into playable games, ranging from Marvel Rivals on consoles to literary adaptations like Alice in Adventureland, which can be played online at Pulsz social casino, but there are plenty of games inspired by musicals.
Broadway and video games might not seem like the most obvious combination, but the worlds of theater and interactive entertainment overlap more often than you might expect. Below, we present ten of the best:
1. Grease: The Official Video Game
Released for the Nintendo Wii and DS in 2010, Grease: The Official Video Game is based on the famous film adaptation of the stage musical. Players sing and dance through the songs associated with the show. A must for fans.
2. Wicked: The Game
This match-3 puzzle game is hard to find nowadays, as it has been removed from the Google and Apple app stores. But it was great fun, making use of the Land of Oz as a backdrop, as well as the musical’s popular characters.
3. The Rocky Horror Show Video Game
Released in 2024, The Rocky Horror Show Video Game transforms Richard O’Brien’s cult musical into a side-scrolling platformer. Its soundtrack reworks familiar songs from the show into chiptune-style arrangements, creating an unusual hybrid between musical theatre and an old-fashioned arcade game.
4. Dance on Broadway
Dance on Broadway is probably the most straightforward choice for people who want to play at the theater at home. Released for Wii and PlayStation 3, it applies the motion-controlled formula of Just Dance to songs from stage musicals. Its song selection contains numbers from all the blockbuster musicals, ranging from Chicago to the aforementioned Rocky Horror Picture Show.
5. Stray Gods: The Roleplaying Musical
Stray Gods was basically designed as an interactive musical, allowing players to control Grace, a young woman who inherits the powers of a Greek Muse and becomes involved in a murder mystery populated by modern versions of Greek gods. Sounds bonkers? It is, but it’s lots of fun.
6. Once Upon a Jester
This underrated indie adventure revolves around two friends who create a traveling theater company as part of a plan to steal a royal diamond. It’s not going to blow your socks off with its graphics and gameplay, but that’s part of the charm.
7. Balan Wonderworld
Balan Wonderworld is an action platformer built around the mysterious Balan Theatre. The game’s heroes, Leo and Emma, travel through 12 theatrical worlds while wearing elaborate costumes that give them different abilities. It divided critics, but we like the fact its plot wasn’t presented in words, but in music and song.

8. Wandersong
We love the concept behind this one. In Wandersong, players control a bard who hopes to prevent the end of the world by learning a mysterious song. Singing is the main way of interacting with the environment, helping you solve various puzzles and challenges.
9. Figment 2: Creed Valley
This imaginative action-adventure takes place inside the human mind, where emotions, opinions and nightmares appear as physical characters. It’s not strictly an ode to musicals, but it does have interesting boss-levels that are basically musical showdowns. Interesting stuff.
10. The Artful Escape
The Artful Escape follows teenage musician Francis Vendetti as he prepares for his first major performance and tries to escape the expectations created by his famous uncle. It’s something of a rock opera, but we love its focus on the concept of theatrical identity.
