Toni Rae Salmi Leads The Hub's ACT A LADY, Beg. Tonight

Casting has been announced for The Hub Theatre's summer production of JORDAN HARRISON's gender-bending comedy, ACT A LADY. The men of a small 1920's Mid Western town have decided to put on a 'real fancy dress up' play in full drag. The cast is led by a trio of amazing actresses - Helen Hayes nominated actress TONI RAE SALMI as Dorothy, the no nonsense, accordion playing head of her household; Helen Hayes Award Winner and Hub veteran JENNA SOKOLOWSKI as Lorna, the object of men's affections and expert makeup artist; andNORA ACHRATI as Zina, the passionate and powerful theatre director accompanies her 'from the continent.'

Virginia Rep's Children's Theatre of Virginia opens Richard Scarry's Busytown tonight, July 5th at Willow Lawn, 1601 Willow Lawn Drive. The show will run through July 28, 2013. Based on the beloved books of Richard Scarry and adapted by Kevin Kling, this zany musical shares a day in the life of Huckle Cat, Lowly Worm, Betsy Bear, and other favorite characters. The catchy score with music by Michael Koerner and lyrics by Kevin Kling and Michael Koerner, will dazzle patrons of all ages.

Barter Theatre announces the finalists for the 13th annual Appalachian Festival of Plays and Playwrights (AFPP) to be held beginning today, July 5, through July 12 at Barter Stage II. Theater-Con, the annual summer theater conference returns to Hampton Roads this July with more classes and a comedy festival headliner. In its third year, the two-week conference is an initiative by multiple area theaters and performance groups to engage community participation in live theater through free classes, workshops, panel discussions and ticketed events. Running from July 8th to 21st, the conference is expected attract over 500 participants from across the region.

Virginia Repertory Theatre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern with a production of Steel Magnolias featuring an all-star cast. The show opens on Friday, July 12, 2013 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, and runs through August 25, coinciding with the official anniversary on August 1. Sixty years ago in 1953, six actors, two children, a dog and two pigs moved into a historic ruin called Hanover Tavern. The transplanted New Yorkers founded Central Virginia's first professional theatre and named the company in memory of a deceased college friend, Barbara Barksdale.

Celebrity Magician and America's only World Champion Illusionist, Wayne Alan, the owner of The Historic North Theatre in Danville, VA, announce that the First Annual Houdini Festival which was originally scheduled for late June has been rescheduled for November 1-2, 2013. This will allow for a strong promotional tie-in with October 31, which is the anniversary of Houdini's death. The theatre's haunted attraction in the basement; Houdini's Haunted House will also remain open the two days after Halloween. The event is open to the general public as well as magicians.
