Airborne: The Bessie Coleman Musical, with book by Beau Dixon and lyrics by Jewelle Blackman, is one of eight original works featured in Vanguard Theater's 2026 Illuminating New Voices Festival in Montclair, NJ. The festival runs over two weekends, May 2–3 and May 8–9, showcasing new works in development that explore themes of autonomy, identity, and resistance. The works were selected to reflect, as festival producers Lenyx Rose and Imani Nyame describe, "what happens when who we are becomes something outside of our control and the ways we attempt to reclaim ourselves."
