Performance Network Theatre Announces Associate Artistic Director; to Hire Managing Director

By: Feb. 24, 2012

On the eve of its 30th anniversary, the board and executive staff of Performance Network undertook a strategic analysis. Based on an identified need for greater capacity and to support both its Artistic and Management areas, it will adopt the dual management structure that is the industry standard for producing professional theatres around the country.

Moving forward, an Artistic Director and a Managing Director will lead the non-profit organization, focusing on the Artistic and Managing aspects of operations. This relationship will be highly collaborative, but will divide responsibilities, with David Wolber (Performance Network’s Artistic Director) responsible for all artistic and technical programs, and the Managing Director responsible for marketing, development, and financial management oversight, and general business operations.

The position of Executive Director will be eliminated, and current Executive Director Carla Milarch will move to a new position as Associate Artistic Director.  As such, she will support the core programming of the professional season while taking on responsibility for Literary Management and the oversight for PNT’s ancillary programs including the Fireside Festival, The Mosh Pit Series, the Children’s Theatre Network, and all Education and Outreach programs. In addition to her new duties, her position of Associate Artistic Director will also mark Milarch’s return to regular artistic participation as a director, sound designer, and actress, for which she has won numerous awards.

“I’m looking forward to working with Carla as her participation with our programming increases. We’ve been working together for years, as staff members and as artists, so it’s exciting to think about what we’ll be able to accomplish together: more great theatre, no doubt, as well as increased educational outreach and artist development programs.” Said Artistic Director, David Wolber.

“Board and staff are united in their belief that this will provide for exciting growth and sustainability in artistic programming as we head  into the next 30 years.” said Board President, Ron Maurer.

Performance Network Theatre will begin the search for a Managing Director immediately. Milarch will serve as Interim Managing Director until the position is filled.

Founded in 1981, Performance Network Theatre has grown from a fledgling company to Ann Arbor’s only resident, professional theatre. The Network reaches 40,000 theatre patrons and children each year through the year-round Professional Series and the Children’s Theatre Network. Performance Network also presents the Fireside Festival of New Works and a series of classes on theatre-related topics. The Network provides uncompromising artistic leadership in the region and produces works that engage, challenge and inspire audiences and artists.
