Hattie Winston and Emily Yancy are featured in a dramatic play reading of Emily Mann's "Having Our Say" under the direction of Fay Hauser-Price, one performance only, at 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 13 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Culver City. Presented by Los Angeles Inner City Cultural Center and the African Grove Institute for the Arts in association with UCLA Beloved Community Initiative.
Based on the book "Having Our Say: The Delany Sisters' First 100 Years," Emily Mann's stage adaptation premiered at the McCarter Theatre where she was artistic director, and ran for 9 months on Broadway in 1995 with Gloria Foster and Mary Alice in the leads. Hattie Winston, Emily Yancy and Fay Hauser-Price are veterans of theatre, music, film and television with extensive credits as actors, singers, writers, producers, and directors. More information on the artists and the show is at https://www.innercityculturalcenter.org. Tickets are $25.00, available in advance on EventBrite, https://having_our_say.eventbrite.com, and at the door depending on availability. Parking is free with validation.
Join Emily Yancy and Hattie Winston for a special one-off reading of HAVING OUR SAY at the Los Angeles Inner City Cultural Center.
Kristina Wong’s Pulitzer Prize finalist “Kristina Wong, Sweatshop Overlord” will open at The Kirk Douglas February 15, 2023 (with previews beginning February 12th). Chay Yew directs this coproduction of Center Theatre Group and East West Players, with additional support from the Skirball Cultural Center. I managed to catch the ever-in-motion Kristina in Tempe, Arizona where she is the ASU Gammage Artist-in-Residence for three years.
Los Angeles audiences will have the opportunity to experience new theatre thanks to Center Theatre Group’s L.A. Writers’ Workshop Festival which will take place over the course of two weekends, September 9-11 and September 16-18, 2022 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre.
Playwright Benjamin Benne’s Alma (already in previews) will world premiere March 13, 2022, at Center Theatre Group's Kirk Douglas Theatre, produced in cooperation with American Blues Theater. Juliette Carrillo directs Cheryl Umaña in the title role with Sabrina Fest as her daughter Angel. I had the most delightful Zoom interview with Cheryl before she had to go to her rehearsals.
The national touring company of LITTLE BLACK DRESS arrives in Los Angeles December 3, 2019 playing at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. The combination musical and audience participation improv (directed by Christopher Bond) features co-creator Danielle Trzcinski with Jennette Cronk, Jenna Cormey and the sole male in the cast Clint Hromsco. Clint took some time out between his multi-character performances at the GE Theatre @ Proctors in Schenectady, New York to answer a few of my inquisitive probings.
Antaeus Theatre Company's 2018 Southern California premiere of NATIVE SON has been chosen as the third and final production of Center Theatre Group's BLOCK PARTY 2019, beginning April 18, 2019 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. Nambi E. Kelley's adaptation of Richard Wright's classic novel Native Son will be reprised with its entire original Antaeus cast of nine, again with director Andi Chapman at its helm. I had the chance to ask some delving questions of Jon Chaffin, who portrays NATIVE SON's most integral character, Bigger Thomas.
