Hector Berlioz’s dramatic legend, neither opera nor oratorio, may best be described as a musical fantasy. It is based on Goethe’s play, in which Faust, in despair at the state of his life, enters into a pact with the devil. We join Faust on a journey through heavenly desire and infernal doom, and witness moving love duets, beautiful arias and cheerful marches. We also experience magnificent choral scenes, in which the 200-strong chorus includes a large children’s choir.
The American tenor Paul Groves has received great critical acclaim for his portrayal of Faust inSalzburg,Paris,Los Angelesand elsewhere. Bryn Terfel, here appearing as the Devil, is a Bergen Festival favourite who consistently takes away the breath of the audience with his expressive voice.
Berlioz has been called the wizard of orchestration. In Grieghallen the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra led by Sir Andrew Davis will present the finest nuances of the work.
