Two French mercenary knights set out on a quest for relative moral redemption against the classic comic background of late 14th-Century ecclesiastical politics. A story of friendship, love, noble feats of arms, indiscriminate brutality, the progressive refinement of medieval table manners and the general decline of the chivalric ideal at the onset of the Great Papal Schism of 1378. New and meandering comedy with no contemporary parallels worth noting.

Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified):

Theatre’s casting notes: No actor in the play should speak with a French, Italian or English accent in any instance unless it is their own natural accent, even when characters lapse into 14th-Century English usage. All actors play multiple characters. All must have strong comic timing and abilities.

Sir Alfred / Others:

Male, 30s. Poor knight in identical circumstances to Sir Ralph (see below), but of a calmer, more philosophical bent. Has a dry sense of humor and tries to take things in stride, but there are limits to his patience.

Catherine of Siena / Others:

Female, 30-65. Forceful, persuasive zealot devoted to Church reform. One of the most famous mystics of the day, and an amusing and eloquent raconteur – she is the play’s narrator.

Margery Galeazzo / Others:

Female, 30s-40s. Provincial noblewoman. Secretly confused and frightened by her strong sexual drives, which she adamantly believes she has mastered through a religious devotion excessive even by the standards of the time. Anxious to improve her station, and firm to the point of severity when it comes to the improvement of other peoples’ behavior and conduct.

Cardinal Robert of Geneva / Others:

Male, 30s-40s. Rich, powerful, elegant and pitiless nobleman whose many cruelties include a penchant for making sarcastic remarks.

Bartolemeo Prignano / Others:

Male, 30s-40s. Hardworking cleric from the slums of Naples. Consumed by bitterness at the incredible corruption of the Church. Later becomes Pope.

Pope Gregory XI / Others:

Male, 40s-60s. Timid man with failing health. Lacking in personal conviction, he is only compelled to action by the person most successful in playing on his political and personal fears. Rather afraid of going to hell.

Illuminator / Others:

Male, 20s-40s. Professional medieval painter of portraits and illuminated manuscripts. Energetic enthusiast and somewhat prickly perfectionist. Star-struck fan of Catherine of Siena.

Sir Ralph / Others:

CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. Male, 30s. Poor knight, forced by low funds into a band of roving mercenary killers. Conscience-stricken and committed to genuine moral reform, but frequently loses his temper and kills anyone in sight.
