Please prepare a brief comedic monologue (no longer than 2 minutes) – either classical or contemporary. Please bring a photo and resume, stapled back-to-back.
Adaptation of Jean Anouilh's 1940 romantic comedy. Story of Amanda, a poor hat-maker from Paris, who is invited to a chateau by an eccentric duchess to spend a weekend trying to make her suicidal nephew, Albert, forget about the death of his great love, the divine Leocadia. Amanda, it turns out, is a dead ringer for the dead woman, and if she can convince Albert that she is his lost love for just three days, then Albert just might not kill himself. A gossamer tale of love and trickery, in which a fake can give more pleasure than the real thing.
Seeking (all roles are available unless otherwise specified; four Equity contracts available):
Note: No housing is available to out-of-area performers.
Amanda:
Early – mid 20s. Young and spirited hat-maker who is brought to an elegant chateau where she is asked to impersonate the long lost love of the Duchess’s heartbroken nephew. She is spunky and fiercely independent. There is mention made that she is short (5’2”).
Prince Albert:
Early – mid 20s. Handsome young prince, heartbroken over the death of his great love, the divine Leocadia. He was at one time passionate, but is now distant and consumed by loss, living only to elaborately re-enact his brief love affair with Leocadia over and over again. Privileged, with the manner and stateliness of the very wealthy, but also a bit peevish and petulant.
Hector:
50s or above. An obedient, though dim, “old country squire” and companion to the Duchess. He is quiet, mostly because the Duchess rarely lets him get out a word. He is faithful and sincere. Actor playing Hector will double as either the Ice Cream Vendor or the Taxi Driver.
Butler:
Man, any age. Proper and by-the-book, he is the Butler to the Duchess and helps in the re-enacting of Prince Albert’s love affair with Leocadia to the exact detail. He is fiercely competitive with the Head Waiter.
Head Waiter:
Man, any age. Another pawn in the Duchess’s elaborate re-enactment, he is a proper – though a bit snarky – Head Waiter of the elegant French café where the Prince and Leocadia shared their first meal. Must have strong physical comedy skills. Actor will double as either the Ice Cream Vendor or Taxi Driver.
Duchess:
CAST. Auditioning performers will be considered as possible (emergency) replacements, should any become necessary. 50s or above. Woman of slight stature, as the play describes, but larger-than-life, the Duchess is the eccentric aunt of Prince Albert and the mastermind behind the elaborate attempt to re-create his love affair with Leocadia in the hopes of relieving him of his depression. A woman of means, the Duchess is elegant yet direct, sophisticated yet opinionated, and at her core, deeply caring.
