BREAKDOWN

NOTE: This musical adaption of the classic 1964 animated film is performed in the style of Lion King with some actors wearing head dresses to emulate the character. Some operating puppets, some life size, to tell the story. It remains true to the film version in dialogue and song. All sets and costumes are duplicated from the film. As we strive to remain true to all of the voices and characters they we come to know and love, it is recommended that you view the film to find the mannerisms and voices of the characters you are auditioning for. Familiarize yourself with the holiday musical selections for musical choices. This is truly an ensemble driven show. All characters must sing and with the exception of Sam and Bumble, have basic dance abilities. Elves are dancer /singers who are robotic in movement and the Deer are agile and stylized in their movement. It is important to commit to the characters while making vocal and physical choices to bring these characters to life.

SEEKING:

All roles will be understudied.

SAM THE SNOWMAN: A Snowman- A warm, middle-aged man with a relaxed demeanor. A powerful storyteller who never gets in the way of the story he’s telling. Always on stage with many non sequitur lines. A knowing sense of humor; an appealing, warm singing voice matching the tone of Burl Ives in the animated film. Note: Actor wears a hard-shell body with rolling wheels to glide over stage. Vocal range – Baritone - top: C5 bottom B3.

RUDOLPH: a young buck- Youthful; physically agile; winning performer; vulnerable but strong; a solid singer. Basic tap dance may be required. He flies in this version so flying experience a bonus thus the physical agility reference. Vocal range tenor -top: D5 bottom: A#3 uses some falsetto.

DONNER: Rudolph’s father. Physically agile; tougher on the outside than he is on the inside. Definitely paternal in nature. Requires basic tap dance ability. (most likely the Yukon cover)

SANTA CLAUS: Larger-than-life- personality; cheerful but distracted. Agelessly youthful but reads middle-aged. Unlike the typical depiction of Santa, the Santa in this production is not heavyset! Strong singing /speaking voice reflecting that of animated film. Vocal range top: D5 bottom: B3. Note: ACTOR MUST BE WILLING TO SHAVE HIS HEAD to match the look of the animated film Santa.

MRS. DONNER: Rudolph’s mother Maternal, soft-spoken, quietly strong. Warm mezzo. (Dancer / singer who covers Elf / Snowkin tracks as needed.)

HERMEY: an elf- Charmingly apologetic, but with inner strength. Strong comic sensibility; moves well and has a strong character voice. Reflecting mannerisms and vocal tone of the animated film character. Vocal range top: D5 bottom G#3.

BOSS ELF: Humorless manager of the elves’ workshop; innate comic sensibility matching voice quality and mannerisms of the animated film character. Basic dance ability. (Singer who usually plays Moonracer and is a Snowkin – possible Sam cover).

CLARICE: a young doe- youthful; physically agile. Strong willful, loving, flirtatious; has a lilting pure soprano voice in the style of a Disney like Snow White or Cinderella. Vocal range top: C5 bottom B3.

YUKON CORNELIUS: a prospector- tall, large man who reads mid- 40's; instantly likable character; slightly absent-minded; physically agile and strong comedic ability. Basic dance ability. (Will double or cover Coach Comet) Vocal range top: D5 bottom C4.
