Lieutenant Torasso:
Man, early 20s–30s. Often given to laughter and opera singing. Baritone, up to a top F.
Sergeant Lombardi:
Man, 30–50. A cook; inured to the soldiers’ jokes about the quality of the food he prepares. Baritone, up to a top F.
Lieutenant Bari / The Mother:
Male actor plays both characters, 30–50. Bari: Veterinarian with a love of gambling and not much else. Mother: Fosca’s mother, in flashback. Baritone, up to a top F.
Major Rizzoli / Ludovic:
Male, 20s–40. Rizzoli: Sober, straight-arrow type. Ludovic: Fosca’s duplicitous husband, in flashback. Tenor, up to an A.
Private Augenti / The Mistress:
Male actor plays both characters, 20s–30s Augenti: Private in the army. Has a good sense of duty and cameraderie. Augenti: In flashback, the mistress to Count Ludovic, Fosca’s deceitful husband. Tenor, up to an A.
