At an overwhelmingly white workplace where appearance is everything, a long-suffering receptionist finds herself in personal, professional, and psychic jeopardy when her ruthless boss hires a hip new employee in an effort to improve the company’s image and “culture.” Suddenly, the two young, Black
social climbers are forced together and torn apart by their race, ambition, and otherworldly circumstances. A bitingly funny, wildly imaginative new play, JORDANS is a story of identity mistaken, power subverted, and rage unleashed.
JORDAN: 20s. Black. Character is female-identifying. The longtime receptionist at an overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. Smart, hard-working, exhausted, and filled with a deep-simmering rage. Although she puts in all the labor that makes the space run, both she and her work go unseen and unrecognized by her white colleagues. When she is seen, she is actively disrespected and dismissed. A realist, she sees how things are, and believes that it is unlikely they will change. She’s just trying to survive, until she makes a bold choice to disrupt the status quo. A LEAD role for a talented actor possessing both comedic and dramatic gifts and is comfortable working in a highly physical style in a core ensemble. Role involves nudity.
1. JORDAN: Mid/late 30s. Black. Character is male-identifying. The newly-hired “Director of Culture” at an overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. Charming, smart, personable, ambitious. Has spent most of his life in Black spaces working with “specialty brands,” and is excited for an opportunity to make change and be heard–and to hopefully also advance his own position in the process. However he is quickly shocked, frustrated, and overwhelmed by his white colleagues’ ignorance and Jordan’s skepticism, and when pushed to the brink, his worst qualities emerge. A LEAD role for a talented actor possessing both comedic and dramatic gifts and is comfortable working in a highly physical style in a core ensemble. Role involves nudity.
HAILEY: Late 30s-50s. White. Character is female-identifying. Modern girlboss with an old-school boys’ club mentality. Frank, commanding, cutthroat. Loves power and is fiercely protective of her own position. Sharply funny. Prides herself in “saying what’s on [her] mind” although that may just be a tactic that lets her get away with saying rude things. Baldly transactional in her interactions and relationships. Always looking for an angle. Wants to reap the benefits and cultural caché that come from running a diverse workplace without doing the work of self-reflection. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble.
EMMA/OTHERS: 20s-30s. White. Character is female-identifying. An employee at the overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. The “cool girl” of the office with a downtown vibe. Cares deeply about the performance of not caring, disdains almost everyone while secretly desperate for attention. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble. Will also play other smaller roles (studio rental clients, etc.) throughout the piece.
MAGGIE/OTHERS: 20s-30s. White. Character is female-identifying. An employee at the overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. Type-A, stern but eager to please. She’ll be the boss’s favorite or die trying. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble. Will also play other smaller roles (studio rental clients, etc.) throughout the piece.
FLETCHER/LIL KLONOPIN/OTHERS: 20s - 30s. White. Characters are male-identifying. FLETCHER: An employee at the overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. A bro’s bro. Crude, aggro, obsessed with scoring with hot chicks. Will also play a number of other smaller roles throughout the piece including LIL KLONOPIN: A Soundcloud rapper. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble.
RYAN/OTHERS: 20s-30s. White. Character is male-identifying. An employee at the overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. A beta bro, but he’s cool with that. Eager, a little oblivious, easily influenced. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble. Will also play other smaller roles (studio rental clients, etc.) throughout the piece.
TYLER/KYLE PRICE/OTHERS: Late 30s-early 40s. White. Characters are male-identifying. TYLER: An employee at the overwhelmingly white event space/rental studio/production facility. An older millennial trying to fit in with his younger coworkers. A slightly more refined bro. A little unpredictable. Will also play a number of other smaller roles throughout the piece including KYLE PRICE: A new-age motivational speaker, focused on maximizing one’s potential. A role for an actor with strong comedic instincts who is comfortable working in a physical style in a core ensemble.
