12 PM – Equity female dancers who sing 500 Eighth Avenue, 12th Floor

and

Thursday, December 13, 2012 Pearl Studios

10 AM – Equity male dancers who sing 500 Eighth Avenue, 12th Floor

3 PM – Equity male rhythm tappers who sing New York, NY

Please note that ECCs for women and men are being held on separate days. For the three separate men’s ECCs listed above, separate ECC sign-up sheets will be posted. Equity men who consider themselves appropriate candidates for more than one of these three ECCs may sign-up for/attend more than one.

Please be warmed up and ready to dance when your call begins. All dancers will dance barefoot. In addition, male rhythm tappers will also dance in tap shoes, and should bring them to the audition.

Some may be asked to stay and sing after all have danced. Please prepare 16 bars of a Legit as well as a contemporary / R&B / Afrobeat song that shows off your voice and range. Bring sheet music; an accompanist will be provided. In addition, please prepare a brief African chant of your choice, to be sung a cappella.

Please bring a current picture and resume, stapled together.

Seeking (note: All characters are African, mixed race or of African descent):

Female Chorus Dancers: Must be able to play authentically African. Must be able to dance well enough to handle choreography rooted in the gestural language of Bill T. Jones and extended into contemporary African movement. Must be able to sing, sometimes multi-part harmony, but – most importantly – be familiar with or have a feel for Fela Kuti’s invention, Afrobeat music. Dancers will embody Fela Kuti’s legendary “Queens”: young women from all over West Africa, Christian, Muslim and Animist, from polygamous and monogamous backgrounds, who served as backup singers and dancers for Fela and were his lovers as well. At a certain point, he took them all as his wives and called them his “Queens”. Tall and stature is of interest, but not required.

Male Chorus Dancers: Must be able to play authentically African. Characters are 18 - 40. Performers must be able to dance well enough to handle choreography rooted in the gestural language of Bill T. Jones and extended into contemporary African movement. Pure African Dance Big Plus. Able to improvise. Ballet and Modern. Acrobatic training of great interest, but not required if the performer has great coordination, flexible body and is able to learn new style quickly. Characters are members of Fela’s entourage, composed of young toughs, aspiring musicians and charismatic, attractive hangers-on. Performers must be familiar with - or have a feel for - Fela Kuti’s invention, Afrobeat music. Ability to sing a plus, sometimes multi-part harmony. Singing a plus.

Male Dancer with Rhythm Tap: Must be able to play authentically African. Character’s age may be anywhere from youthful to middle-aged. Physically active. Must be an excellent Rhythm Tap artist with ability in the African and Modern styles – choreography rooted in the gestural language of Bill T. Jones and extended into contemporary African movement. Able to improvise. Ballet and Modern. Acrobatic training of great interest, but not required if the performer has great coordination, flexible body and is able to learn new style quickly. Ability to sing, in particular Afrobeat style, a plus.
