BREAKDOWN

[THE GRINCH]
Male, mid 30s – 40s, any ethnicity. A beastly, charming curmudgeon. Scary but with a heart underneath. Has the size and presence of a Music Hall superstar with deft athleticism. Needs a strong, booming baritone singing voice with falsetto. PRINCIPAL

[OLD MAX]
Male, 40s–60s, any ethnicity. A trustworthy, benevolent narrator who is inspired by nostalgia. With his urbane elegance, long-limbed grace, and gently sardonic humor, he actually reminds us of Dr. Seuss. Needs a strong bass-baritone singing voice. Sings You're a Mean One. PRINCIPAL

[YOUNG MAX]
Male, Late Teens-20s, any ethnicity. He is a puppy. Very energetic, very athletic, lots of stamina, positive, and fun. Our best friend. Needs a strong, bright tenor singing voice. PRINCIPAL

[CINDY-LOU WHO]
Female, 8–12, any ethnicity. Height 4'2 and under. Energetic, charismatic, sweet. Needs to be able to pick up dance quickly. Needs a beautiful singing voice with range. Sings the showpiece ballad of the show. PRINCIPAL

[MAMA WHO]
Female, 30s–early 40s, any ethnicity. Quirky, funny, on the brink of saturation but still maintaining complete control. Needs a strong, warm mix-soprano singing voice with chest range as well. PRINCIPAL

[GRANDPA WHO]
Male, mid 40s-50s, any ethnicity. The eldest of the family, comically hard of hearing. Not unlike Grandpa Simpson. Needs a strong character baritone singing voice. PRINCIPAL

[GRANDMA WHO]
