Breakdown

In this edited version of Shakespeare’s play Tarell Alvin McCraney brings to light historical parallels between the French colonization of Haiti and the Roman invasion of Egypt. Set in Haiti in the late 1700’s where the colonized inhabitants of Santo Domingo grow tired of their strained relations with their former French slave masters and long for true independence. France meanwhile stubbornly clings to this jewel in its’ Caribbean crown while just under the surface the beginnings of a revolution ripple. Against this backdrop a great General from the colonial army and a colonized Queen begin a forbidden and passionate romance.

Seeking actors who are extremely skilled with language and text. As always, we are committed to casting a diverse company. We are seeking actors of all cultures, disabled and non-disabled.

SEEKING:

CLEOPATRA: A Haitian Queen. 30’s – early 40’s. A beautiful woman with a palpable sexuality, who is equally capable of turning heads and commanding a room. She has enormous access to her emotions and can seem naïve, insecure and girlish in one moment and fierce, fiery and all-powerful the next. Brilliant with words she can match wits with all comers. Must be a confident to singer.

MARC ANTONY: A European General. 30's – early 40’s. He is a career military man. A brilliant strategist and a revered fighter. He is every inch a soldier. Torn between his loyalties back home and his new found love, he is a man in turmoil. A complicated man with ready access to his darker aspects.

OCTAVIUS CAESAR: A European man, early 20's. Somewhat delicate and cerebal in contrast to the physical heft of Marc Anthony. His power center is his quick mind and blue blood. He is a new generation of leader. A maker of alliances rather than a wager of wars.

ENOBARBUS: A Haitian Man. Late 20's - 30s. A warrior and pragmatist. Funny and sensible. He is deeply skeptical of the burgeoning relationship between Antony and Cleopatra. The voice of reason perhaps. Loyal to a fault. Should be comfortable singing.

LEPIDUS: A European man. Late 30's. Small and a little timid. In the highly charged world of politics he is a bit of a nervous bumbler. Has a wired and frenetic quality.

OCTAVIA/IRAS: Late 20’s – 30’s. To play OCTAVIA, the beautiful sister of Caesar, who marries Marc Antony after his first wife’s death. She is the quintessential political wife. AND to play IRAS, a waiting woman to Cleopatra. We are particularly interested in actresses who’s physical appearance might suggest a mix of European and Caribbean heritage. Must be a confident singer.

CHARMIAN: A Haitian woman. Late 30’s - 40's. Cleopatra’s most intimate confidant. She knows how to brilliantly navigate her mistresses quickly changing moods. Must be a confident singer. “Sings like the wind in a storm”.

POMPEY: A man of mixed European and Haitian background. Early 20's a soldier. He has the physical power to match Antony and the intelligence to match Caesar. He has all of the power and attributes of a great leader in the making. This role will most likely double with ALEXAS.

MARDIAN: A Haitian man. Androgynous. He is the musically gifted eunuch who Cleopatra relies on to lift her spirits. He can sing like angel or a demon. Must be a confident singer.

AGRIPPA: A man of mixed Haitian and European decent. Early 20's. A soldier. A crucial friend and confidant to the young Caesar. He is shrewd and confident. This role will most likely double with MENAS, a pirate. Duplicitous. Will attach himself to the coat tails of whoever he thinks will be in power next.
