Urban Bush Women is a Black women-led theatrical dance company and social activism ensemble at 138 South Oxford Street in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 1984 by choreographer Jawole Willa Jo Zollar. It combines performance, community engagement and ancestral knowledge from the African diaspora, telling stories of Black Women+ that have historically been overlooked. Rather than a weekly-class school, it works through its touring company, an annual Summer Leadership Institute, BOLD workshops for community members and college students, and initiatives supporting Women+ choreographers and producers. It has created over 40 works, reaches around 25,000 people a year and has won multiple Bessie awards.
