BWW Reviews: HAIRSPRAY Tour Is Still Campy, High-Energy Fun
by Michael L. Quintos - April 07, 2010
The 1960's were certainly a turbulent turning point in American history, a decade of social upheaval that has shaped the nation so significantly, that it's hard to fathom that it was just a little under 50 years ago when such openly disagreeable behavior was the norm. While some may argue that tensions between races still exist, the fact that a modern audience can look back at these past events with a knowing sensibility (and be able to laugh about it all, to boot) is an encouraging, wonderful thing. HAIRSPRAY, the high-energy, laugh-a-minute musical now back on stage at The Orange County Performing Arts Center (thru April 11) shines a light on race relations during the early part of this volatile decade with a wonderfully delicious storyline, sprinkled with campy fun, an infectious score and a sensational cast that is beaming with joy.

BWW Reviews: 'RAIN' Pours Beatle-Mania onto Orange County, CA (ends 3/28)
by Michael L. Quintos - March 25, 2010
Arguably one of the most popularly-beloved pop acts of the 20th century, the Beatles -- that engaging Liverpool, UK foursome comprised of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison and Ringo Starr -- have not only left an indelible mark in music history, but have also carved themselves a place in pop culture that still resonates today. It's no surprise, then, that when RAIN®: A TRIBUTE TO THE BEATLES took the stage of the Orange County Performing Arts Center (performances continue through March 28), there were plenty of screams, lots of heads bopping (to the beat of the music), and ample breakouts of infectious sing-alongs. Steeped in affectionate nostalgia, the theatrically-leaning concert production is an enjoyable multi-media presentation that is huge in both sound and visuals.

BWW Review: Second City Skewers the Real O.C. in Improv Show (ends 4/11)
by Michael L. Quintos - March 23, 2010
There's a funny saying that's been going around for the past few years: 'It's funny... 'cause it's true!' While some aspects of this particular show have been exaggerated for (relatively) full comic effect, Second City's CAN YOU BE MORE PACIFIC? (now playing at The Laguna Playhouse thru April 11) hilariously skewers the over-the-top personality types that have become infamously synonymous with the citizenry of Orange County: wealthy, egostic, (predominantly) Republican, luxury-indulgent, overly nipped-and-tucked, and seemingly comfortable with life behind the so-called Orange Curtain.

by Michael L. Quintos - March 19, 2010
It's right off the spool-when Pacific Symphony dissasembles the traditional concert format to deliver an energetic and mesmerizing third 'Music Unwound' performance: 'Gershwin and All That Jazz.' Led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, this special concert features French Canadian pianist Lefevre and one of America's leading bass singers, Kevin Deas, performing a slate of American music to reveal the profound influence of jazz on composers throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Rather than following a traditional format, this concert is being presented in a provocative new way, featuring a 'collage' of music-short vignettes performed in a fluid stream-without the interruption of any breaks other than two intermissions. 'Gershwin and All That Jazz' takes place Thursday-Saturday, March 18-20, at 8 p.m., in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall.
