EDUCATION PROGRAMS-SCR THEATRE CONSERVATORY

January 2016

KIDS ACTING CLASSES (GRADES 3-6)

Winter Session: Jan. 12 - March 19, 2016

The multi-year, progressive Kids Acting Program introduces students to the world of theatre through creative dramatics and acting experiences, with an emphasis on developing self-esteem, self-confidence and personal expression.

YEAR I-EXPLORATION

Class times: Grades 3-4, 5-6: Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, 4-6 p.m. or Saturdays, 9-11 a.m.

First-year students begin to explore the world of storytelling, movement, vocalization and character development, with an emphasis on ensemble work.

YEAR II-DEVELOPMENT

Class times: Grades 4-6: Tuesdays or Thursdays, 4-6 p.m. or Saturdays, 9-11 a.m. or 11:15am-1:15p.m.

Second-year students refine individual skills and move on to improvisation, enhanced character work and beginning dramatic play development. Prerequisite: Year I

YEAR III-ADVANCED TRAINING

Class Times: Grades 5-7: Tuesdays, 4-6 p.m. or Grades 5-6: Saturdays, 9-11 a.m

Third-year students use the actor's tools-body and voice-to further develop their technique through mask work, movement, voice and improvisation. Prerequisite: Year II

END-OF-YEAR PERFORMANCES:
After 10 weeks students share in-class demonstrations for family and friends.

TUITION: $295 per 10-week session; $265 discounted price for siblings. To receive the sibling discount, you must enroll by mail or phone.Winter Session registration will open for new students on December 1, 2015.

TEEN ACTING CLASSES (GRADES 7-12)

Winter Session: Jan. 12 - March 19, 2016

The multi-year, progressive Teen Acting Program introduces students to the world of theatre through creative dramatics and acting experiences, with emphasis on development of self-esteem, self-confidence and personal expression.

YEAR I-TOOLS OF ACTING

Class times: Grades 7-8: Saturdays, 9-11 a.m. or 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m.;

Grades 7-9: Wednesdays, 4-6 p.m.;

Grades 9-12, Saturdays, 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m. or 1:30-3:30 p.m.

First-year students explore movement, vocalization, character development and ensemble-building. Through workshop exercises, students begin to develop the acting skills needed to create truthful characters.

YEAR II-TRUTH IN ACTING

Class times: Grades 7-9: Thursdays, 4-6 p.m.; Saturdays, 9 a.m.-11 a.m. or 11:15-1:15p.m.;

Grades 10-12, Saturdays, 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m.

Second-year students will deepen their skills and delve more thoroughly into character development and script analysis, with an emphasis on creating acting objectives and discovering scenes through character relationships. Prerequisite: Year I

YEAR III-ADVANCED TRAINING

Teens who have previously completed two years or more in the Teen Theatre Program may select from a range of classes focusing on different areas of performance. All the classes below have a prerequisite of Year II course work.

GRADE 7-9: TEEN ENSEMBLE
Class times: Jan. 14 - March 17, Thursdays, 4-6 p.m.
Using the body and voice-the actor's tools-to further develop technique through mask work, movement, voiceand improvisation. The class culminates in a spring performance project.

GRADE 6-8: GRADE TEEN ENSEMBLE
Class times: Jan. 16 - March 19, Saturdays, 9-11 a.m.

Using the body and voice-the actor's tools-to further develop technique through mask work, movement, voice and improvisation. The class culminates in a fall performance project.

GRADE 9-12: GRADE TEEN ENSEMBLE
Class times: Jan. 16 - March 19, Saturdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
As serious students advance, they continue to explore and enrich their acquired skills, including physical and vocal work, characterization, emotional truth and availability, active pursuit of an objective and ensemble storytelling. This is an important class for honing skills and taking greater artistic risks and it culminates in a fall performance project.

TEEN IMPROVISATION I
Class times: Jan. 16 - March 19, Saturdays, 11:15 a.m.-1:15 p.m.
Theatre games and character work for those who participate in competitive improvisation. Classes will work on short- and long-form improv and will continue to emphasize truth in acting.

TEEN IMPROVISATION II
Class times: Jan. 16 - March 19, Saturdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
This class continues the challenges and creative freedom of improvisation. Students will be challenged to think faster, make stronger choices and trust their instincts. Prequisite: For third-year students who have completed one year of Improv at SCR or have taken Comedy Sportz elsewhere.

END-OF-YEAR PERFORMANCES:
After 10 weeks, students share in-class demonstrations for family and friends.

TEEN PLAYERS AND JUNIOR PLAYERS

After two years in the program, students are eligible to audition for the Players, which are advanced ensemble groups that perform fully produced plays in the Nicholas Studio during the spring session.

JUNIOR PLAYERS

Class times: Tuesdays, 4-6 p.m. and Saturdays, 9-11 a.m.
For serious and committed acting students in grades 5-8, enrollment in this class is by audition only. Additional rehearsal time may be required. Classes meet twice weekly. This is a year-long commitment.

TEEN PLAYERS
Class times: Wednesdays, 5-7 p.m. and Saturdays, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
For serious and committed acting students in grades 9-12, enrollment in this class is by audition only. Additional rehearsal time may be required. Classes meet twice weekly. This is a year-long commitment.

ADULT ACTING CLASSES

Winter Session: Jan. 11-March 7, 2016 (no class on Presidents Day, February 15)

SCR's nationally acclaimed adult acting and playwriting classes are taught by top professionals in their field. The courses are designed for both career-minded professionals and those interested in personal growth and development. Adult students may choose from the classes below to create a program that suits their individual pace and interests. Students will discover their acting talent, polish communication skills, develop spontaneity and meet new people. Classes are held in the theatre's state-of-the-art Education Center, specially designed to meet the study and performance needs of students. Training takes place in classrooms and on stages in the Emmes/Benson Theatre Center, located near South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa. SCR is in Orange County, just an hour from Los Angeles' film and television industry.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING: ACT I BASIC SKILLS
Class times: Jan. 11-March 7, Mondays 7-10 p.m.
Learn the fundamentals of acting in a lively and entertaining class that includes exercises in the basic skills of improvisation, communication and monologues. Recommended for those new to acting or as a refresher course.

FUNDAMENTALS OF ACTING: ACT II SCENE STUDY
Class times: Jan. 12-March 1, Tuesdays, 7-10 p.m.
Take the next step in acting by studying and performing scenes, with an emphasis on making strong, imaginative choices rooted in character and text.

ACT III ADVANCED SCENE STUDY

Class times: Jan. 12-March 1, Tuesdays, 7-10 p.m.
Delve deeper into acting technique-script analysis, performance and the ability to create a character-with emphasis on action and objective.

IMPROVISATION I
Class times: Jan. 12-March 1, Tuesdays, 7-10 p.m.
Focus on acting, characterization, creativity and spontaneity through improvised scenes and theatre games. In this fast-paced, fun workshop, the emphasis is on thinking quickly, making stronger choices and increasing confidence.

ADVANCED IMPROVISATION

Class times: Jan. 13-March 2, Wednesdays 7-10 p.m.
This is a class for students who have moved beyond the basics of improvisation and want a more intense experience. Instructor Greg Atkins' no-nonsense, high-energy approach to improvisation will help students break through fear of the unknown and prepare them for any acting challenge, whether on stage or off.

MUSICAL THEATRE

Class times: Jan. 11-March 7, Mondays 7-10 p.m.

Approach the Broadway song from the standpoint of the actor-how to act a song, not just sing it. This class starts with the idea that if you can act you can sing.

DISCOVERING YOUR VOICE: INTRODUCTION TO PLAYWRITING

Class times: Jan. 11-March 7, Mondays 7-10 p.m.
