Gardner and Fanny Church are moving from their Beacon Hill home to their cottage on Cape Cod. Gardner, a retired poet, slips in and out of senility while his wife, Fanny, tries to keep them afloat. They have asked their estranged daughter, Mags, an artist, to come home and help. She agrees in the hopes that she can paint their portrait and bt so doing will come to terms with them and they with her.
