Steppenwolf Theatre's 50th Anniversary Season continues with a gripping and lyrical world-premiere by Academy Award-winning ensemble member Tarell Alvin McCraney. When a Chicago father loses his child in a clash with the police, he is visited by three strangers who advise him to take the city's cash settlement, relocate and forget his grief–or else remain, haunted by memories of the world his child fought so hard to protect. Directed by Awoye Timpo, this new work is a vital and timley look at the spirit of activism set against the most indifferent system of them all: the almighty dollar. Starring ensemble members Alana Arenas, Glenn Davis and Jon Michael Hill, reuniting onstage for the first time since the Tony Award-winning smash success of Purpose. Joined by ensemble member Namir Smallwood, fresh off his critically-acclaimed Broadway turn in Bug, alongside Esco Jouléy and Michael Potts making their Steppenwolf debuts.
In celebration of its 58th anniversary awarding recognition for Equity theater, the Joseph Jefferson Awards announces its nominations for the 2025 –2026 season, including the Goodman Theatre, Chicago Shakespeare Theater and more.

Tarrell Alvin McCraney’s world-premiere play WINDFALL is part somber, part whimsy — which is true to his unique playwriting style. It’s a poignantly topical play, yet sometimes too on the nose. I enjoyed how McCraney blends the hyperreal and the surreal in a play that asks the question: Should we reject the system altogether (in this case, law enforcement), or should we take what it offers us as a form of fighting from within? While WINDFALL certainly sways audiences towards one side, it genuinely ponders both.
