Knoxville, TN: What do you get when you combine the glorious sounds of gospel and the magnificence of opera? Multiple standing ovations by a large crowd who have shouted “hallelujah” at the five previous performances of Knoxville Opera Goes to Church…A Celebration of Talent! The 5th annual concert, sponsored by Home Federal Bank, DV Communications, and The 5th Commandment Fund will feature the Knoxville Opera Gospel Choir and local soloists together with Knoxville Opera artists in a unique presentation of gospel, spirituals, and highlights from the popular opera Carmen. The free-admission concert, one of Knoxville Opera's yearly 75 education/outreachactivities, will take place on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 5:00 p.m. at Greater Warner Tabernacle A.M.E. Zion Church, 3800 Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Knoxville.

Nashville Opera ON TOUR will present John Davies' Jack and the Beanstalk, a traveling opera production featuring the five-person 2015 Mary Ragland Young Artist Program members. The work is directed by Nashville Opera's Director of Education and Outreach, Chandra McKern. This 40-minute operatic version of Jack and the Beanstalk is set to music of Gilbert and Sullivan and features Jack, his mother, and their cow, Snickers, the Giant, his wife, and the Trouble Man.

One moment, the performers march militantly across the stage and screech like sirens, the next, they sing Pergolesi's galant Stabat Mater like sweet seraphim. The thirty-one performers of TOXIC PSALMS, the latest production created by conductor Karmina Šilec and her ensemble CARMINA SLOVENICA, have certainly created a provocative pastiche. After an initial run in Berlin last year, TOXIC PSALMS played as part of the 2015 PROTOTYPE FESTIVAL, marking the work's North American debut.

Jagde replaces the previously announced Ukrainian tenor Misha Didyk, who withdrew from the production for personal reasons.

Lyric Opera of Chicago presents Richard Wagner's majestic Tannhäuser conducted by Sir Andrew Davis in a new-to-Chicago production by Tim Albery. It opens on Monday, February 9 with seven performances through Friday, March 6. Performance dates are Feb. 9, 14, 18, 26, Mar. 2, and 6 at 6pm; and Feb. 22 at 1pm. (Note earlier curtain times.) Tannhäuser will be sung in German with projected English translations.
