Susan Graham Launches Recital Tour Today by BWW News Desk
- March 28, 2014 Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Susan Graham launches a four-date U.S. recital tour today with pianist Bradley Moore in Myrtle Beach, SC, with the trek including the singer's Kimmel Center recital debut in Philadelphia on April 2. The recital program of Purcell, Berlioz, Poulenc and Cole Porter will be drawn from Graham's second Onyx album, Virgins, Vixens & Viragos. In a review of the recording, the UK's Sunday Times noted: 'It's hard to think of another contemporary singer who could pull off the tour de force Graham achieves here, with numbers ranging over a period of almost 300 years.' Back in New York on April 26, Graham will perform a special concert at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium. The program - titled 'Sculpting Sound' and held in conjunction with the exhibition The Passions of Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux - will feature the music of the 19th-century French sculptor's friends and collaborators, including Bizet, Gounod and more. Graham will be joined by pianist Brian Zeger (director of the Juilliard Vocal Arts Department), as well as by bass-baritone Evan Hughes and soprano Layla Claire. This summer, Graham will cap her season in Paris by making her role debut as Anna in The King and I at the Théâtre du Châtelet (June 13-29).

BWW Reviews: BALLET DU GRAND THEATRE DE GENEVE Returns to the Joyce With a New York Premiere by Sondra Forsyth
- March 27, 2014 The evening of March 25th 2014 was opening night for a six-day run at the Joyce Theater of 'Glory', a mostly glorious offering choreographed by Greek-born Andonis Foniadakis for the Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve. A press release referred to the piece as 'an evening-length work' but that depends on your definition of an evening at the theater. 'Glory' is only about an hour long and is performed, wisely, without an intermission. Interrupting the action would have been a mistake. Even so, programming for adults rarely lasts a mere 60 minutes. The company might have been better off giving us a double bill, although to be fair the tickets are modestly priced at $10 to $49 and $26 to $37 for Joyce Theater members.
BWW Reviews: Saying Something New About Graham: The Martha Graham Dance Company at New York City Center by Mary Callahan
- March 27, 2014 It's probably not possible to say something about Martha Graham's choreography that hasn't already been said. After all, 2014 marks the Martha Graham Dance Company's 88th season. But just because these works have been seen by audiences a hundred times before does not make them any less meaningful or relevant. There will always be a few Graham 'virgins' in the house, experiencing the magic and mystery of the technique and canon for the first time. And on the other hand, there will always be Graham connoisseurs in the audience, ones that have seen each of the company's twenty-eight works. Even for them, however, the experience is new thanks to a different cast of dancers and an ever-changing contemporary lens.

BWW Reviews: PAUL TAYLOR DANCE COMPANY by Barnett Serchuk
