BWW Review: MAESTRO AMJAD ALI KHAN & SONS Mesmerizes at Orpheum Theatre
by Matt Hanson - October 01, 2015
There are other paths in this world than the clearest, largest, and most trod. The dominant paradigm is not the only way. That is the message of cultural integrity in the 21st century. The truth about other paths is that they begin from a different place and so have a different perspective on the world. They also lead towards a different future.
The World Music Institute Debuts New Series MASTERS OF AFRICAN MUSIC Tonight
by BWW News Desk - October 01, 2015
Making his World Music Institute debut, Nigerian music legend Orlando Julius plays classic Afrobeat with a psychedelic twist, constantly pushing musical boundaries. Julius is one of the original Afrobeat pioneers, predating even Fela Kuti. Starting in the '60s, he brought together traditional African sounds and rhythms with American pop, soul, and R&B. He spent many years in the United States collaborating with Lamont Dozier, the Crusaders, and Hugh Masekela, and his voice has been an essential part of the invention, development, and popularization of Afro-pop. Julius recently released a widely praised album Jaiyede Afro, which The Guardian called a 'rousing new set' and which WMI's Par Neiburger calls 'One of the best Afrobeat albums I've ever heard.' This year also marks the 50th anniversary of his 1966 release, Super Afro Soul, which made him a national celebrity in Nigeria. The record's dramatic, highly melodic incorporation of soul, pop, and funk was ahead of its time, and arguably shaped the funk movement that swept over the United States in subsequent years.
Pacific Symphony Orchestra Performs World Premiere Piece, BEYOND LAND AND OCEAN, Tonight
by BWW News Desk - October 01, 2015
Orange County, Calif.—Sept. 2, 2015—Almost two years ago, Pacific Symphony and Music Director Carl St.Clair charged Composer-in-Residence Narong Prangcharoen with setting Orange County to music. Since then, the composer has been on a journey to discover what makes OC home to more than 3 million people. The project titled “OC in Unison,” funded by The James Irvine Foundation, officially began in January 2014 when Prangcharoen began touring the region. Inspired by the diverse landscape and the stories of the people, the piece—“Beyond Land and Ocean”—began to take shape. Brought to the Symphony's attention when he entered and won the Symphony's American Composers Competition in 2005, Prangcharoen has been tasked with encapsulating the diverse aspects of the county (founded in 1889) into a single 20-minute piece of music. “I'm not sure how he's going to do it,” St.Clair admitted earlier this year. “But if anyone can, it's him.”
