- February 08, 2016 The Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), the 2016 Musical America Ensemble of the Year, ends its 20th anniversary season with the Boston premiere of David Del Tredici's complete Child Alice (1981) featuring the acclaimed soprano Courtenay Budd. Based on poems prefacing Lewis Carroll's Through the Looking Glass and Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this 135-minute evening-length work changed the course of 20th century music.

- February 06, 2016 Orange County, Calif.-Jan. 19, 2016-Swashbuckling pirates, bumbling policemen, innocent young lovers and an eccentric major-general join in the boisterous fun for Pacific Symphony's next Family Musical Mornings presented by Farmers and Merchants Bank, "The Pirates of Penzance: Opera for Kids!" This campy, comedic morning featuring the popular comic operetta by Gilbert and Sullivan is sure to send kids off singing the catchy tunes by the famous duo. Favorite songs include "I am a Pirate King!" and "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General." This production for kids, led by the Symphony's new Assistant Conductor Roger Kalia, is appropriate for all ages, but especially those ages 5-11. It includes costumes, scenic elements and projected visuals, and features both professional singers and talented students from Chapman University. The script was written and directed by Peter Atherton, and the role of the Pirate King is played by Symphony favorite, baritone David Stoneman.

California Symphony to Perform BEETHOVEN'S SYMPHONY NO. 7, 3/20 by BWW News Desk
- February 05, 2016 WALNUT CREEK, CA (February 4, 2016) – Beethoven's Symphony No. 7, and a performance by California Symphony Principal Clarinetist Jerome Simas and Principal Bassoonist Douglas Brown in R. Strauss's rarely-heard double concerto Duett-Concertino, highlight the California Symphony's “Textbook Classics” program on Sunday, March 20. The Orchestra performs the overture from Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro to open the concert, led by guest conductor Leif Bjaland. The concert is at 4 pmat the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, with a free pre-concert talk with Bjaland beginning at 3 pm.

- February 05, 2016 Orange County, Calif.—Feb. 3, 2016—Pacific Symphony partners with South Coast Chinese Cultural Center/Irvine Chinese School to present the “2016 Lantern Festival” commemorating the end of the Lunar New Year celebration. This free, family-friendly Lantern Festival—featuring the traditional dragon dance, riddles and lantern making usually associated with the end of the Lunar New Year—takes place Saturday, Feb. 20, from 3-6 p.m., in the lobby of the Renée and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall, prior to the Symphony's opera production of Puccini's “Turandot.” Musical highlights include string quartet performances by Pacific Symphony and Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra, as well as Chinese folk dance and customary Chinese songs sung by the Irvine Chinese Chorus. Lanterns on display are curated by artist and curator Trinh Mai and include lanterns created by Irvine Chinese School students, as well as seniors from Nguoi Viet who are part of the Bowers Museum Treasures program.

- February 04, 2016 Orange County, Calif.—Feb. 3, 2016—Pacific Symphony's chamber music series, Café Ludwig, takes its audience on a foray into music inspired by dance for “Dancing with the Stars,” a program of exuberant works by star composers showcasing lively dance rhythms. The program brilliantly reveals connections found in energetic gypsy and Hungarian rhythms, a seductive and languorous habanera and that quintessential dance form—the waltz—as first conceived by Brahms, then reimagined by Schoenberg. For the eighth season, charming and sensational pianist Orli Shaham serves as the series' curator/host, leading this matinee of music on Sunday, Feb. 28, at 3 p.m., in the Samueli Theater at Segerstrom Center for the Arts. - February 04, 2016 The Woman at the Window: The Triangle Factory Fire - a powerful original oratorio with music and lyrics by 85 high school choir students from downtown Los Angeles' Ramon C. Cortines School of Visual and Performing Arts based on the horrific 1911 fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York City in which 146 garment workers, mostly young girls from immigrant families, perished in the worst workplace tragedy in American history until the Twin Towers fell on 9/11 - is being premiered by the students in conjunction with the Los Angeles Master Chorale Chamber Singers in free performances today, February 4, at noon, and Friday, February 5, 2016, at 7 pm, at the high school's main auditorium.

These are some of the important questions that music raises, and each year, Pacific Symphony, led by Music Director Carl St.Clair, attempts to shed light on the answers by exploring a different facet of American music through the American Composers Festival (ACF). This year's ACF spotlights organ music through four highly acclaimed organists and the splendor of the king of instruments-in this case, the one-of-a-kind William J. Gillespie Concert Organ, located in the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Built from steel, tin, oak, poplar, maple, lead and carbon fiber, the astounding instrument found in the Symphony's concert hall required three years and 42,000 hours of labor by a team of organ builders at C.B Fisk in Gloucester, Mass., before making its debut with Pacific Symphony in 2008.
