If performances start April 24, are they trying to stay in this season or be pushed to next season as the eligibility cutoff for Tonys is the next day?

The idea is to work and to experiment. Some things will be creatively successful, some things will succeed at the box office, and some things will only - which is the biggest only - teach you things that see the future. And they're probably as valuable as any of your successes. -Harold Prince

They’re likely foregoing a preview period and just opening cold. The show is already frozen, so there’s no need for previews.

Given the extremely quick turnaround for this, I would imagine they are foregoing a preview period and are just opening cold to have it be eligible this season. Otherwise they could just wait till sometime later.

I'm excited for them but at the same time, seeing it from the balcony of St James will most likely be a very different experience than seeing it from the last row at Park Ave Armory.

This is a truly wild turnaround…and opening right away in a new theater without having had an audience in that space before…

Also, for the record, these producers are gonna have to get the whole Tony nominating committee in in the 3 scheduled performances before the deadline on 04/25…which is doable, especially because the nominating committee technically HAS to attend, but it’s just making an already over-crowded calendar even worse. Interesting to note: this new show art is very clear in their awards intentions. They plan to push this as a musical and as such, campaign in Best Musical…based on their reviews at the Armory compared with the rest of the season, it’s a good gamble…but I wonder if it pays off, especially with that limited run. What show has its Best Musical nom hopes lessened by this 15th new musical?

I’m curious to see if there will be any backlash from Tony nominators for them trying to shove this show in for awards contention like what happened with The Sign In Sidney Brustein’s Window last year when they had a quick turnaround and only came away with 2 Tony nominations

I wouldn’t be shocked if the producers had the nominators in to see it at the Armory.

I wonder this too…recency bias only goes so far when this committee is being forced to a dozen shows in a couple weeks.

Was that actually backlash? That production wasn’t nearly as well-received as this.

I’m very happy about this. The show was completely off my radar and by the time I found out and wanted to see it, it was sold out.

This would be against Tony Awards rules. Some of them obviously may have seen it at the Armory, but the production they are to consider is on Broadway (in this case, at the St. James).

Given Uncle Vanya has an opening night on April 24th, and Mother Play & Great Gatsby both have its opening on April 25th, I'm guessing Tony nominating committee members will watch ILLINOISE at its first performance on April 24th matinee?

This is presuming that Tony nominating committee members watch the opening performance.

Excited for this! Ticket prices are very reasonable IMO too. Snagged a pair of front mezzanine seats for the first weekend. $133 each including fees isn't bad for front mezz.

The Tony Awards just got a lot more interesting.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

We finally have a scrappy, artistic Off-Broadway musical transfer this season that the Tonys always go ape for.

Is this our 2024 Best Musical?? This season is wild. When was the last time 15 new musicals opened on Broadway in one season?

This was spectacular at the Armory. I got teary eyed during The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts. I do hope it snags best choreography.
