Not exactly shocking the Guardian liked this and hated American Buffalo.

Deadline is a rave:

"Tracy LettsThe Minutes would be one of the most thrilling new plays on Broadway this season even if recent real-life events hadn’t made it seem as uncanny as it is funny and, ultimately, disarming. The Minutes – there are a brisk 90 of them in all – begins as one thing and ends up quite another, and every step along the way is so finely rendered that we’re too busy savoring the moment to see what’s waiting just ahead.

Featuring an impeccable cast headed by Noah Reid – the Schitt’s Creek star makes a wonderful Broadway debut here – The Minutes reunites playwright and cast member Letts with his August: Osage County director Anna D. Shapiro, and together they find once again the eccentric, perfect balance of laugh-out-loud humor, dark undercurrents and emotional violence that made the prize-winning August unforgettable."

NY Daily News/Chicago Tribune is positive:

"It’s an important play, a visceral theatrical experience, all about what has happened to retail American democracy and how this nation decides on which stories about itself it wants to believe."

This NY Times takeaway mirrors mine:

“Ultimately, I came to feel that if it is the theater’s main business to mirror who we are — to act, like the minutes of a meeting, as an absolute record of what we say and how we behave — then “The Minutes” does what a play aimed mostly at white people must. It shows us how we are starting to understand, but still mostly failing to accept, that our privileges are tied to a history of denying them to others. I think it is warning us, in its own dramatic way, to do better, before the minutes, as they will, harden into millenniums.”

‘The Minutes’ on Broadway Brilliantly Shows How Democracy Dies Under Strip Lighting

Tracy Letts’ excellent play “The Minutes” features “Schitt’s Creek” star Noah Reid as a town council member confronting those determined to rewrite history and destroy democracy.

Theatermania seemed to like everything but the way the ending was handled. After having a few days to process this play, I agree. Not sure where the "twitter mob" comment comes from. Are people on twitter bashing Letts?

I’m very happy for the show - their cast and crew -  but wow I’m shocked. I wonder how much has changed since I saw it in previews in March 2020!

Same here. I assume it's a lock for a Best Play nomination. Who are the other likely nominees, and who's the favorite at this point?

RaisedOnMusicals, my guess is the play nominees will be:

  • The Lehman Trilogy
  • Hangmen
  • The Minutes
  • Clyde's
  • Skeleton Crew

That last slot is more competitive, of course. POTUS might get that nomination instead, or maybe one of the Vineyard plays if enough nominators actually saw them.

Entertainment Weekly is mixed. Grade: C

A small-town council meeting goes extremely awry in the Pulitzer-winning playwright's confounding latest.

Once again I find myself on the exact same wavelength as Helen Shaw. I think she is 100% correct in noting that our bleak political reality has rapidly outpaced this show, which significantly dulls the blow it intended to inflict.
