Our first entry in the spring 2022 Broadway sweepstakes is unabashedly New York.

The first Broadway revival of Neil Simon’s classic comedy Plaza Suite begins previews tomorrow night at the Hudson Theatre, prior to a March 28 official opening. The five-person show marks real-life couple Matthew Broderick and Sarah Jessica Parker’s long-awaited return to the New York stage; they play three couples occupying the same room at the Plaza Hotel successively. Rounding out the cast are Danny Bolero, Molly Ranson, and Eric Wiegand. Helmed by John Benjamin Hickey in his Broadway directorial debut, Plaza Suite will play a limited engagement through June 26.

“Karen and Sam are a long-married pair whose relationship may be headed for an early checkout. Muriel and Jesse are former high school sweethearts who seem destined for an extended stay. And Norma and Roy are the mother and father of the bride, ready to celebrate their daughter’s nuptials – if only they can get her out of the bathroom.”

Who’s made a reservation?

I'm skipping this one unless there's an announced absence for Broderick. He puts me to sleep.

I’ll be seeing this in May and looking forward to it! I’m not seeing it for who’s in it. I’m seeing it for the play itself.

I am also going in May. I absolutely love Sarah Jessica Parker, and have never seen a Neil Simon play live, so I am very excited!

Is anyone going to first preview in just under an hour?

There were a few things posted on here last night but apparently they were deleted.   This is not the forum to look for any honest reaction to anything.  Maybe this production is advertising here?

Uh, most shows advertise here and I doubt anyone's review was deleted unless it was straight up mocking someone's looks or something.

What are you talking about? Someone on here made a nasty comment which was deleted along with a couple of responses to the comment. There have not been any thoughts on the show posted by people who have seen it yet. I'm sure that will change as the show continues its preview period and even after it opens.

A few things?  Really?  I’ve been following this thread and zero review was posted, just a now-deleted pointless rant about SJP’s voice.  No one has said anything about a preview performance.

The only thing I read here was a attack on her voice and one mean spirited remark by someone with really nothing to say.  But not a review or anything of importance.  Glad it is gone.  That picture looks lovely.

Didn't see it Dame, but I'm glad they are deleting comments from people that did not see the show. It makes no sense to comment about the details of a show you didn't see.

Most shows advertise here? You mean through producers shilling their shows on a message board?

Just pure class.  Two life long theater actors who have stood by the industry during its darkest hours.  So happy that this show is running and I was one of those who held held on to the ticket!

I’m at the show now. It’s just at intermission between Act 1 and Act 2 right now (theres a brief pause between Act 2 and Act 3). SJP is definitely carrying the show. I didn’t see the comment on the chat about her voice that was deleted but I wasn’t bothered by her affectation that she has—I think it fits the time period and play. She’s definitely working hard for the laughs and the audience is eating it up. Broderick is doing his usual deadpan schtick but I don’t think anyone was expecting anything else. The set and costumes are lovely. There’s nothing really daring or different so far, but again, this isn’t the production for that. You’re here for the stars. They’re selling posters, keychains, mugs, sweatshirts, and tshirts for merch.

The deleted comment wasn’t about her performance.  The person was being snarky about her speaking voice on the curtain call video.  His snarky comments were personal attacks on SJP and had zero to do with PLAZA SUITE.  This is why they were rightfully deleted.

Act 2 is MUCH better than Act 1. Lots of physicality from them both. It’s a much showier act. The affectation from Act 1 is gone. Looking forward to Act 3.

I was also there tonight, and I mostly enjoyed it.  The set is beautiful and got its own applause when the curtain came up.  I was worried at intermission as both SJP and MB were stiff as a board in Act I.  Something just felt strained, and it seemed like they were both trying for laughs and not getting them.  But after intermission, it was like someone threw a switch.  Acts II and III were much funnier, and both of our leads had great moments of broad physical comedy that they made the most of.  They're not trying to do anything revolutionary here, but it's a perfectly pleasant evening at the theater.

I saw the national company of the original staging and know the script. The first act text was Simon’s stretch at the time, a dip into darker waters that would arrive fully with The Gingerbread Lady and continue into his family trilogy and Lost in Yonkers. It was never especially laugh-ridden, Karen an insecure wife aware that her distracted husband is slipping away. Simon actually cut laughs out of town to serve the integrity of the underlying drama, always sad. I am curious to see how Parker plays it. I suspect she brings something fresh.

I was there tonight and thought it was pretty wonderful.   I thought they handled the darker tones of the first act beautifully and you really felt a marriage that was straining.   The second and third parts were both hilarious.   They are both real stars, and they're giving it their all for the audience, and it was so much fun.   They both had moments where the laughter was so explosive throughout the theatre.   My favorite was the third act because it was near non stop laughter once it got going.   It'sseems silly to say, but I was surprised how great their onstage chemistry is.   The set,  costumes and lighting were all first class.   A definite pleasure night.

Sadly, most don’t know the play going in so they’re unaware that Act 1 isn’t played for laughs, which is why it starts the play.  Each Act elevates the level and style of comedy which is why Act 3 is slapstick.  Many assume all 3 Acts are broad Neil Simon comedy.  Nope.
