I’m seeing it today and they’re holding us in the lobby.  I assumed they’re waiting for other tests results, but the house manager just said they’re “figuring out logistics.” I wonder if Lee Harrington, who is on for Sarah Jane Moore, has gone on yet—maybe they’re rehearsing a few things.

Not sure if she has gone on yet for that role, but I saw her as Emma Goldman last weekend and she was lovely. Judy Kuhn is fantastic, but I'm sure Lee will be great as well.

They cancelled today's matinee as well but plans to go on tonight.

Partially incorrect -- she said she HOPES to be back for the final performances.

Probably because 10 days means 10 days still.

Hairspray tour in Detroit cancelled last night's performance (the matinee went on) and both shows today. Currently planned to resume on Tuesday for week two of the run. I was supposed to go tonight and switched my tickets to Thursday--fingers crossed!

Broadway down to just 19 shows playing now. Thankfully no cancellations recently. The next show to start up is Plaza Suite at the end of February.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

We'll have a very short window in late February between the closure of Skeleton Crew and the start of Plaza Suite with only 18 shows playing.  I cannot remember a time (the recent staggered reopening of Broadway aside) where there were that few shows playing a normal schedule.

The worst I could think of in recent memory was after the bloodbath of January 2009. I was able to find the grosses for w/e 2/1/2009 and there were still 22 shows playing at that point.

Was there SVOG aid back in 2008/2009?

I have a feeling if there was no SVOG money there would be less than 18-19 shows running on Broadway.

It's definitely not ideal, but only 4 of the empty theaters (not under renovation) don't have something lined up to start between March and June. I'm hopeful that the large number of empty theatres will push people towards the shows that are running, softening the blow of a difficult season.

Hoping GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY takes one of those available theaters.

Hairspray in Detroit is cancelled tonight (Wednesday). I received an email at 3:46 saying the show has, “been cancelled due to breakthrough positive COVID cases within the company of Hairspray.”  Hopefully, they can put on a show tomorrow.

With Omicron BA.2 spreading fast, Macbeth shutting down for a week, A Strange Loop canceling its first preview due to positive cases, and everything that's been going on at Company, I think it's unfortunately time to bump this thread. Hopefully it won't be as extensive as the December/January version.

Eerily similar to the Omicron variant, but symptoms seem to appear lesser though easier to transmit. All the more reason the mask mandate and vaccine mandates need to remain for Broadway. All you can get this variant even if you caught a previous strain of COVID before.

Can this thread just be about cancellation news, rather than armchair epidemopology, fear-spreading and speculation? I'd love to know what good that does anyone.

The York Theater cancelled about 10 days of performances of Penelope due to COVID, and started performances on April 2nd.  New Ohio Theater cancelled tonight's first preview of Songs About Trains, but no reason was given on their website (could be a tech issue, could be COVID, etc).  Is this the start of another wave?

I am perfectly aware that this will 100% fall on deaf ears, but seriously...what good do fear and doom-and-gloom speculations do anyone? What will happen will happen.

Probably an uptick, but not a full-blown nationwide wave. What we have seen these last few years is a major case surge in the fall / winter, along with at least 1-2 more moderate upticks in the spring / summer.
Part of the reason why COVID may be considered an episodic disease, should this pattern continue at least these next few years.

Not a cancellation, but Shaina Taub is out of SUFFS until April 16 and will miss tomorrow’s opening night of her own show. So unfortunate.

What I’ve also noticed since theaters reopened is that the industry tends to get hit hard and fast whenever there is any sort of COVID uptick. Nearly 85% of infections in the Northeast are BA.2 cases at the moment, and only now are cases beginning to rise throughout the United States.

COVID hits this industry faster because everyone is still testing regularly.

In my opinion, COVID testing is a 2020 policy/procedure that is still being used for some reason in 2022, post vaccination. I have never understood why once everyone is vaccinated the point of being tested? Unless you are showing symptoms I really don't see the need to quarantine at this point. Cases have gone up but hospitalizations and deaths are still dropping.

There's many reasons this industry is behind on a lot COVID-wise but keeping testing policies and cancelling shows in the process is truly baffling. If the Broadway League keeps the mask policy past the April 30th date, it's just insane. With that being said vaccination requirements should definitely stay.
