Is anyone planning to attend this year's virtual version? I've gone to the live event a few times, but feel like each year got lower and lower in quality and fear that there's going to be nothing unique about this year's edition that we're not getting amongst 10824 other virtual events.
I would be hesitant myself. I went in 2018 and really really enjoyed it . Went back in 2019, and it seemed totally different. All of the focus (at least to me) seemed to be on "Be More Chill."
It just seemed very lackluster and there was little emphasis on classic Broadway --- only the past few years, and upcoming shows. But then that might be the purpose to promote the coming season or two.
In any case it was a distinct letdown for me from the previous year. I didn't go in 2020.
I think BroadwayCon needs to blend the past and the present and the future more effectively. Also to encourage older attendees. (But maybe they just want younger folks, I am not sure)
I went the year they had a Follies reunion and that was wonderful. The rest of the time walking around a convention center filled with high school drama club kids screeching showtunes at the top of their lungs was a living hell.
I also attended in 2018. There were some areas where I felt somewhat "at home," but I will admit that I largely just felt out of place for the most part.
At least this virtual edition has more of an eye towards the future/the inevitable reopening of theatre all around the world. Next weekend, I'll probably only catch portions of a couple of the free-to-stream "MainScreen" events (Game Night, Feud, etc.) just to see how they're doing all this virtually.
I've attended each year. At least you can access the programming for free this year. I agree that there have been good and bad things about each I've attended. Maybe if you aren't sure, don't clear out your whole weekend for it.

I've been to every BroadwayCon and did pay this year because I could afford to support them and I want a 2022 BroadwayCon to happen. (As for the bonus stuff, my "swag pack" was delayed in the mail and I've only watched a few bonus videos, which were fun but nothing super remarkable.)
I've had the YouTube channel on passively about half of the time, and I wish I hadn't had screen fatigue because I'd probably have appreciated them more otherwise. That said, I enjoyed the topics that have been covered, but I'm mostly there for the fun, games, and concerts this go around. I'm looking forward to tonight!
