Is Carousel really going to make it all the way to January 2019?
These are rather low grosses for a really "big" show.
The last time they grossed over a million was 6 weeks ago.
So they have gone from approximately 1.1 million to approximatley 675K. That is a big drop over 6 weeks. And if I am reading the charts right the lowest grosses since they opened.
Interesting to see how it all plays out. Perhaps the replacement for Ms.
Is Carousel still turning a profit with the grosses it has been having? I would think it is an expensive show to run with a larger cast and also a large dance corps.
I was on their website and no performances are listed past 7:30 pm, Sunday January 6th, 2019
Is this the closing date? Maybe this has always been the date? Curious as I know that the box office has not been stellar in the past few weeks. I am also interested as to whom will replace Renee Fleming who goes out 9/2 according to her website. Is she planning to return in late October or November? Her website is mum on that subject. But there are gaps in listed engage
OK I agree that the announcement of the alternate Eliza (who is splendid by the way) would be an unpleasant one for folks who had purchased tickets specifically to see Ms. Ambrose on that day. Although I was offered the chance for a refund at the performance I went to in May --- I happily said no. It was the *show* I wanted to see not the talented Ms. Ambrose! I would have been thrilled to see her as well as her understudy.
However all of those who talk about the difficulty
Susan Graham would be inspired casting but she is booked all of September and parts of October.
Are Deborah Voigt, Jessye Norman and von Stade still actively performing? Maybe they could be lured back from (semi) retirement. Voigt does sing concerts on occasion, but Norman and especially von Stade you see the names less and less. von Stade is actually in Philly during September. Norman doesn't seem to have an engagements calendar that I can find.
I wonder if Fleming's replacement might be Stephanie Blythe? She did at with the NY Phil not that long ago and I believe also with the Houston Grand Opera.
If you check her engagement schedule she is free until November when she has performances at the Met Opera.
Just the kind of "earth mother" voice I like in that role!
I love her gorgeous voice also. I believe she is appearing in Provincetown this summer with Seth Rudetsky.
July 15 and 16th. I would give anything to hear her again on Broadway also. Her concerts are pretty amazing, though.

Can you tell me the name of the understudy? I think Julie and Carrie have more than one. Thanks! I think one person might do both parts.

Just gave this a listen. Very little that I loved actually I wouldn't put this at the top of my list of favorite "Carousel" recordings by any means. I put it far behind the OBC, the 1965 with John Raitt and the movie soundtrack and the TV soundtrack. Not to mention a true favorite of mine, the Command recording with Drake, Peters, Treigle and Venora.
The worst offender is the awful "You'll Never Walk Alone" at the end. They make it soun
How were the understudies? I think the same lady is understudying both Carrie and Julie? So did she do one role one day and the other the next? That is amazing!
I saw this from house seats and I had the fortune of Eliza walking right by me as she made her exit.
(My Eliza BTW was Kerstin Anderson - who did a splendid job)
First of, I have never heard such a hush during the moments of silence that preceded Eliza's exit. The theater was waiting with collective breath held to see what would happen.
And when Eliza walked by me --- she had a wonderful half grin on her face, it was almost an expression of triumph -- or victory
Just brought this home. I bought it last night in NYC. It is splendid! Everyone is just top notch. The cd is full of life, and the booklet is beyond gorgeous, the cover art --- everything. To me it is an example of just how to do a cd RIGHT! I love it! And lots of dialog ---- which is something I truly enjoy. The songs are truly in a fine dramatic context.
Just got the new CD and am loving it! Ambrose sings like a dream and the rest of the cast is splendid. The cd is very theatrical! Lots of dialog. I have already played it through twice. And the booklet is gorgeous!!!! Really captures what I saw in the theater!!!! I got the understudy for Eliza but she was just amazing, and the show is truly a masterpiece from beginning to end. As I said to my friends I was with "a perfect performance
I got a kick out of this when looking at the "Carousel" discount offers. All of these pull quotes are from the original production! Or at least no production in the past 60 years or so. All of these esteemed critics are no longer with us. Reminds me of what David Merrick did for "Subways are for Sleeping." Very clever. Does anyone know if the cut songs are actually listed in the program? I had read that the reprise of "Ju
"I'll watch Amar Ramasar dance all day long - he is captivating."
The above quote was fascinating and perhaps indicates what is so wrong headed about this production. Granted Mr. Ramasar is a great and charismatic performer. But the character of Jigger doesn't warrant this attention! This is not why the character was written. Not even close.
This is not how he was created by R & H. Jigger is a "type" not a brilliant dancer.
So, I ask most sincerely should one have to prove ethnicity next time the "correct casting Police" come after someone. If you have one Latinx parent would it be OK? One grandparent? I mean who is judging here. Do you have to show your birth certificate? What does it require to allow someone to play Maria? Concert or staged version? Without all this hoop-la. Do you have to look hispanic and also be hispanic? I have many hispanic frie
