Thank you - no absolutely not. And certainly from an international tourism point of view, if masks are still required as normal in March 2022 it will 100% affect the market for shows, as I can't see there being much international tourism (longhaul) if they are still a requirement, moreso because it would mean the health situation is far from being under control.

It does appear more and more probable that we could see a few shows back up and running by August. Hamilton could be one of the first. Maybe Wicked, too? Could these big shows be able to take a slight hit for a month or two if they're limited on capacity?

Why do you think August, for some shows?

I’m finalizing moving tickets for the 6th time now for the West End for the beginning of July, hopeful that that will be able to be up and running by that point. All signs are hopeful so fingers crossed.

If the majority of Americans are indeed vaccinated by the end of May, then we could see the green light given for shows to resume. But as it's been mentioned, this could require most shows to bring everyone back for a good month of rehearsals. There's also the likelihood that shows may have to cast a few replacements. So the first shows that would reopen would probably start their rehearsals in July sometime.

I can see that making sense for the few shows that have the money in the bank to do that. Not to mention Wicked has money from Universal and Hamilton from Disney.

I agree - if most Americans are vaccinated by late May/early June (and especially if they give priority to theatre workers) I think there's a decent chance we could see a few of the big name shows (Hamilton, Wicked, maybe a Disney show, etc) up and running by as soon as August or even July, partly depending on how much rehearsal time is needed.

My family and I are eager to reschedule our trip we had planned for last spring (we were supposed to see Hadestown) but at this point have said we most likely won't go until the virus is contained/eliminated to the extent that masks are no longer required. (If I actually lived in/closer to NYC I'd probably go right away when stuff reopens, but we're 4-5 hour drive so planning to spend a few days there). That said though, I do intend to see whatever local theatre there is in my area as soon as it happens, with a mask presumably necessary.

Aside from the question of what there is a market for, bear in mind that there will be no rehearsal until Equity signs off on it and that is unlikely to happen in a workable fashion on the timetable being imagined in the last few posts. Expressly, the protocol provides that full vaccination of the entire company is a condition precedent to even discussions about altering the current (unworkable) protocols. As I have said a bunch of time now, other than a few stunts, plan on the Fall.

Just because people will "be able" to get the vaccine by May 1st doesn't mean they will be able to. The waiting lists and extreme delays are still continuing. It also takes 7 - 8 week until a person is fully vaccinated (one shot, three/four weeks later another shot, then two weeks until it fully kicks in). Then they have to rehearse. 

So, Fall.

People haven't been reading closely. What officials have been saying is that there will be enough vaccines by the end of May to Vaccinate everyone. Not that everyone can or will be vaccinated by the end of May. It's logistically not possible. Because of the large supply that will be available, by May 1st there will be no logististical reason anymore to restrict recipients.

This. And there will certainly be additional requirements requested, aside from vaccinations of everyone who works in the building. Not to mention the still unknown efficacy of the vaccines with the variants, and the unknown length of the efficacy period. And with some producers expecting unions to make salary concessions, I wouldn't expect these negotiations to be fast and smooth.

Have you seen anything about the Sunday in the Park run in London? Is it still happening? Any idea on dates at all? I'm going to make the trip over but there has been 0 word

Actually Jake just did an interview on Playbill.com the other day where he said he really hopes they’re able to. I’m not thinking it’ll happen this year, if it does happen. I’ve heard rumors that “Pretty Woman” is moving to the Savoy so that “Moulin Rouge” has enough time to renovate the Piccadilly before they start this Fall, so Sunday in the Park would need to find a new home if they did it this year.

That makes sense, especially if her sitcom gets picked up for a second season. They’d have to start soon. Pushing it to ‘22 would suck but make sense. I’m making a trip over there at some point he was waiting to plan it around the show. Keep waiting for them to make some sort of announcement

With all of these dire new warnings coming out from the CDC, do you think these reopening plans will slow down? According to the CDC, we're headed for another major wave, so how can Broadway reopen in the fall?

I think it’s too early for any predictions like that. With vaccination rollout at an all-time high, they’re optimistic we can avoid a big wave.

Even if we have another wave, we are talking about something that will open 6 months from now. There is time for a final wave before the majority of Americans are vaccinated. September seems right for reopening, which was basically confirmed by the Broadway League the other day.

If shows made cute masks for their merch, I’d definitely wear one through the performance! Especially with a slogan or line from the show - not just the show logo.

Cases are on the rise in 27 states currently, but the vaccine rollout is also increasing with most states allowing ages 30+ & 40+ to be eligible now. Biden ahs said that by May 1 everyone over 18 will be eligible.

I believe that in two weeks time, anyone over the age of 16 will be eligible for the vaccine in Florida, New York and California (among other states), so that’ll surely help get those numbers up even more.

I don't think we will see significant expenditures towards reopening (not just the cheapie things like taking out ads, posting notices, and selling tickets) until July (which is not that far away) and then shows need three months. So I don't think we will see shows moving up the projected dates. I also don't think anything happening now in terms of waves etc suggests that the fall is not going to happen. As we have been saying, tourism is not going to roar back but a number of shows that can effectively market locally can expect to come back by fall. Also note that hardcore theatre-going zip codes (10024, as a not very random example) have vaccination rates over 50% already. What that tells me is that as soon as we see a passport system in place (which will be very soon in the metro area at least), a LOT of people are going to become much more willing to go to a crowded theatre. The question then is what will they be willing to pay to see.
